There will not be any October baseball for the New York Mets this season. On Sunday, the team lost 4-0 against the Miami Marlins and were eliminated from the playoff contention on the final day of the regular season.

The NL East team made it to the postseason last year. While they did not win the division title, they knocked out the Philadelphia Phillies from the National League Division Series (NLDS) and reached the National League Championship Series (NLCS) for the first time since 2015.

In the Championship Series, they were pitted against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The LA side eventually knocked out the Mets in 6 games and went on to win the World Series by beating the New York Yankees.

The Mets entered the offseason last year with the aim of going further than this. They ended up signing Juan Soto on a $765 million deal, shattering several records. They would even bring in some pitchers and re-sign Pete Alonso.

The Queens-based team did start strong and at one stage of the season, held the best record in the league at 45-24. Things started to go downhill since then.

They lost several games, went on big losing runs, and saw their offense and defense dip. With the Phillies clinching the division title, the Mets found themselves in a tough wild-card race.

Heading into the final day, they were tied with the Cincinnati Reds with a record of 83-78. The Reds though, owned the tiebreaker and were in the final wild card spot ahead of them, meaning that the Mets needed to win their final game of the season and hoped for a favor from the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Brewers did their part. They beat the Reds 4-2 to avoid getting swept in the final series of the regular season and finished with a 97-65 record. The Mets however, failed to do their part.

After losing the first game and winning the second against the Marlins, they needed a win on Sunday. Instead, they got shutout 4-0 in the final game of the season.

In this must-win game, they managed just 5 hits with the trio of Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso going 2-for-10 combined. This loss saw the Reds clinch the playoff berth and knock out the $340 million payroll team.

MLB insider labels Mets’ slump as all-time disintegration

After such a hot start to the season, nobody would have expected the New York Mets to be eliminated from the playoffs on the final day of the season. An MLB insider would call this slump from them an “all-time disintegration.

The Mets were 45-24 on June 12 following their sweep of the Washington Nationals. The 4-3 win was their 6th successive win. After that, they lost 9 of their 10 games, leaving them with a 46-34 record from 80 games.

They kept on having mixed results and ended the first half of the campaign with a 55-42, 13 games over the .500 win percentage mark. A 7-game win streak after two losses to start the 2nd half had them at a 62-44 record.

After that, things just went downhill. Sweeps against the Cleveland Guardians, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Philadelphia Phillies eventually proved too costly for them.

While taking to his X account, MLB insider Jeff Passan expressed his astonishment over this downfall of the team.

The New York Mets lost and will miss the playoffs. At one point they were 45-24. They end the season at 83-79. An all-time disintegration. From the best record in the game to out of the postseason.

After being 45-24 from their opening 69 games, the Mets went 38-55 in their remaining 93 games. Had they reached the playoffs, they would have faced the Los Angeles Dodgers again, this time in the wild card series.

It will likely be a long offseason for the Mets this time out, once again, as they will hope to put behind the disappointment of this campaign and look to make a deep playoff run next season.
