The New York Mets have made another big move this offseason. As per reports, the team has reached an agreement to re-sign pitcher Sean Manaea on a 3-year $75 million deal. The deal though has not been officially announced yet.
The 32-year-old pitcher joined the team in the last offseason on a two-year $28 million deal. The contract had an opt-out clause. After the 2024 season, Manaea exercised this clause and became a free agent once again.
The former Athletics pitcher was one of the most improved players in the 2024 campaign. In the 32 games he started this season, Manaea went 12-6 while pitching with an ERA of 3.47. He picked up a total of 184 strikeouts in the 181.1 innings that he threw this year.
He was one of the three pitchers of the Mets who opted for free agency. While 35-year-old Jose Quintana remains as a free agent, Luis Severino has joined the Athletics on a franchise record-breaking $67 million deal.
This left the Mets with a massive void in their pitching department. They did pick two former New York Yankees pitchers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, with the latter set to transition as a starting pitcher, they were still missing something.
Sean Manaea will now slot into the pitching rotation along with Montas, Holmes, David Peterson, and team’s ace Kodai Senga.

The Mets are also interested in bringing Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki to the Queens. As per reports, they and their crosstown rivals, the Yankees both met with him last week.
NY Mets emerging as ‘cleanest’ option for Pete Alonso after recent moves in the offseason
Going into the offseason, the New York Mets lost one of their star players Pete Alonso to free agency. The four-time MLB All-Star had declined a contract extension in 2023 and hit the free agency market for the first time. Since then he has looking for a new team. Given the recent moves in the offseason, the NY Mets are one of the ‘cleanest’ option for him as per an MLB insider.
In the past few days, names like Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Christian Walker and Josh Naylor have all signed with different teams. On Sunday, the Texas Rangers traded away first baseman Nathaniel Lowe to the Washington Nationals.
This has brought down the number of team who are looking for a new first baseman. As per insider Anthony DiComo, the Mets remain as an obvious fit for him.
With Nathaniel Lowe heading to DC, Pete Alonso's market further shrinks. The Nationals, Yankees, Astros, Diamondbacks and Guardians have all acquired non-Alonso first basemen in recent days.

The Mets remain the cleanest and most obvious fit for him. We'll see how it goes.
In his six-year stay with the Mets so far, Alonso has played in 846 games and has 226 home runs and 586 RBI. The two-time Home Run Derby champion has batted with an average of .249 in this tenure, showcasing his incredible batting abilities.
