The trade rumors in the MLB offseason have heated up once again. As per reports, the New York Mets have now “checked in” on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for a potential trade move as a likely replacement for Pete Alonso.
The Mets have been highly active in the offseason. After landing superstar free agent Juan Soto on a massive $765 million deal, the team added some pitchers to their rotation. However, the team still has some loose ends to tie up.
One of them is the first base position. After the end of the 2024 season, Pete Alonso rejected the qualifying offer from the Mets and entered free agency. So far, the team has yet to reach an agreement with him.
Now the name of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has come up. With him entering his final year, speculations have started to rise regarding his future in Toronto.
If the 25-year-old does not sign a contract extension with the team this year, he will become a free agent once the 2025 season comes to an end. This could see the Blue Jays lose one of their top stars for free.
As per Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets have “checked in” on Guerrero Jr. However, the insider also claimed that a Mets/Guerrero fit “remains in the realm of fantasy baseball”.

"The Mets are holding the line with Pete Alonso, and Steve Cohen fully supports David Stearns’ approach.
Among many alternatives, they have checked in on Vladimir Guerrero Jr."

Last week Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays agreed to a $28.5 million salary for 2025 and avoided arbitration. This will now be the third-highest salary paid to an arbitration-eligible player in the league’s history behind Juan Soto‘s $31 million and Shohei Ohtani‘s $30 million.
MLB insider explains why he does not see Vladimir Guerrero Jr. getting traded to NY Mets
The talks of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being checked by the New York Mets for a trade has ignited some discussions across social media. An MLB insider though does not see this move taking place and explained his reason.
While appearing on the live show of B/R Walkoff, Jon Heyman pointed out the recent moves of the Toronto Blue Jays. The insider believes that the team will not trade Guerrero Jr. while they are still in the race to land Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki.

In the 2024 season, Guerrero Jr. had his best year when it came to batting average. The former Home Run Derby champion hit 30 home runs and batted in 103 runs with a slash line of .323/.396/.544 in 159 games. It now remains to be seen what plans does the Blue Jays have for their superstar as the 2025 season comes closer.
