The New York Mets are currently the trending topic in American sports. The two-time World Series champions have stunned the world by splashing a whopping $765 million on Juan Soto. While that deal has taken most of the attention, the Mets are continuing to bolster other areas as well. They have now signed Japanese pitcher Yuhi Sako on a minor-league deal.
The pitching department is one that the Mets need to fill out the most. Following the end of the 2024 season, three Mets pitcher Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea and Luis Severino became free agents.
Since then, the team has signed two former New York Yankees pitchers Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas. Holmes is projected to be made a starter in the 2025 season.
The team now has another addition in their pitching department. As per reports, the team has landed right-handed pitcher Yuhi Sako on a minor league deal after he impressed in the minor leagues.
The 25-year-old pitcher has not thrown a ball in the major leagues yet. During the 2024 season, he played for the New Jersey Jackals and High Point Rockers of the Frontier and Atlantic Leagues respectively. In 18 games (17 starts), the Japanese international had a 3.88 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 79 strikeouts in 92.2 innings pitched.

Prior to making his debut in the Independent League, Sako made his professional debut while pitching for the Canberra Cavalry of the Australian Baseball League in 2023. During his two-year spell in Australia, Sako posted a 2.14 ERA in 46.2 innings, 54 strikeouts in 27 appearances.

The Mets are one of the teams who are reported to be interested in bringing Sasaki to MLB. As per reports from Jon Heyman, the ace pitcher has been posted to the MLB and can be signed from December 10 to January 23, 2025.
As of Sako, he is expected to join the minor league team of the Mets. A strong showing could earn him a call-up to the major league.
