On Sunday, the New York Mets and the Texas Rangers made a stunning trade deal. The Mets traded away outfielder Brandon Nimmo in exchange for shortstop Marcus Semien from the Rangers.

Both the Rangers and the Mets had a disappointing campaign in the 2025 season. After winning the World Series in 2023, the Rangers finished the 2024 season with a poor 78-84 record. This had many questioning whether they could bounce back in the 2025 season.

While they did improve from their previous record, they still missed the playoffs. The American League side ended the 2025 season with an 81-81 record, finishing third in the AL West division standings.

The Mets, on the other hand, had high expectations. After acquiring the services of 4-time All-Star Juan Soto, the team was expected to challenge for the World Series title, having reached the NLCS in the previous campaign.

Unfortunately for the Mets, they stumbled hard. Following a hot start and having the best record in the league at 45-24, they suffered a major slump in the final 3 months of the season. On the final day of the season, they suffered a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins and missed out on the playoff spots, finishing with an 84-78 record.

The two teams are now trying to bounce back from these disappointments. A few days after non-tendering Adolis Garcia, one of their 2023 World Series stars, the Rangers have now traded away another top name from that championship roster in Semien.

Semien, who signed a 7-year, $175 million contract with the Rangers in December 2021, has $72 million remaining on his contract. Nimmo, meanwhile, had penned down an 8-year, $162 million deal with the Mets in December 2022. He has $102.5 million remaining on this deal. To balance the salaries, the Mets have been reported to have sent $5 million to the Rangers.

Marcus Semien was one of the key players of the 2023 championship-winning squad. His 29 home runs and 100 RBIs in the regular season saw him finish third in the AL MVP voting. Over the past two seasons, the shortstop has now had the same kind of effect as he did in 2023, but did win the Gold Glove in the 2025 season.

As for Brandon Nimmo, he was the longest-tenured Mets player before this trade deal. After joining the team as a first-round draft pick in 2011, he made his debut with the club in 2016. He had another solid performance with the bat this year as he hit 25 home runs and had 92 RBIs with a slash line of .262/.324/.436 in 152 games.

Social media reacts to Marcus Semien-Brandon Nimmo trade between Mets and Rangers

The New York Mets and the Texas Rangers sent a shockwave across the MLB community on Sunday with a trade of Brandon Nimmo and Marcus Semien. The Mets acquired a 35-year-old shortstop while giving up a 32-year-old outfielder to the Rangers.

MLB fans on social media were left stunned. Many users trolled the Mets for this offseason while pointing out the age of Semien. One wrote, “another woeful move“, while expressing their displeasure with the move by the Mets.

In Nimmo’s absence, the Mets do have some options to replace him. They could turn to Jeff McNeil or No.2 prospect Carson Benge for left field. The team could also make moves for a high-profile free agent in Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger.

GM David Stearns in the spotlight following Brandon Nimmo’s trade

The New York Mets made one of their first big moves this offseason by trading away long-time star Brandon Nimmo in exchange for Marcus Semien. Mets GM David Stearns is now in the spotlight as he gets set for a major offseason.

Last year, the Mets were the big winners in the offseason as they landed Juan Soto on a huge $765 million deal. The team would later bring back Pete Alonso and reunite the core of the team.

Following a poor end to the season, Alonso once again became a free agent as he opted out of his deal. Relief pitcher Edwin Diaz then joined him and also opted out of his deal.

One of the biggest priorities for Stearns is to bring back at least one of them. With the trade of Nimmo, the core of him, Alonso, Jeff McNeil, and Francisco Lindor has been broken. Nimmo’s trade, however, also opens up a space in the outfield.

The Mets have been linked with both Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger. Stearns and his team can now pursue one of these hot-hitters and add more firepower to the roster while also having a great defensive star.

Only time will tell what moves Stearns makes in the future. For now, he and the Mets have a long offseason ahead of them.
