Another day, another New York Mets star traded away. On Monday, the Mets traded away 2-time All-Star Jeff McNeil to the Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Yordan Rodriguez. This development sparked wild reactions among fans on social media.

The Mets are having a busy offseason this year while trying to rebuild the team. After trading away veteran outfielder Brandon Nimmo, the team lost out on two All-Stars in Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso through free agency.

While Diaz joined the Los Angeles Dodgers on a 3-year, $69 million deal, Alonso moved to the American League and signed with the Baltimore Orioles on a 5-year, $155 million contract. In contrast, the team have brought in 3-time All-Star Devin Williams, veteran infielder Jorge Polanco and Luke Weaver.

On Monday, the Mets decided to part ways with Jeff McNeil. The 33-year-old, who had been part of the team since 2018, had 1-year and $17.75 million remaining on his deal with the Mets. The team would send $5.75 million to the A’s to cover up his salary.

Following his trade, General Manager David Stearns thanked him for his contribution and wished him well for his future.

I want to thank Jeff for his time and contributions to the organization. He was drafted by this team and grew up in our system.

David Stearns said in a statement

After joining the team in 2013 through the MLB draft, McNeil made his debut in 2018. A year later, he earned his first All-Star appearance and finished the 2019 campaign with a slash line of 318/.384/.531 and hit a career high 23 home runs in 133 games.

In 2022, he would earn the batting champion title while hitting with a .326 average. That year, he hit 39 doubles but had just 9 home runs across 148 games. Last season, he hit 12 home runs and had 54 RBIs in 122 games.
