The New York Rangers set a new record on Tuesday. Unfortunately for them, it is not a good record. The 2-0 loss against the Edmonton Oilers marked their 3rd straight shutout loss at home. Fans on social media would mock them for this.
Following a disappointing finish with a 39-36-7 record last season after a 12-4-1 start, the Rangers made some changes. They fired head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Mike Sullivan, who was let go by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Rangers were crushed 3-0 in their opening game of the season by Sullivan’s former team. That loss came at home at Madison Square Garden (MSG). They would bounce back with an emphatic 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres before crushing the Penguins 6-1 in their home arena.
On Sunday, they took on the Washington Capitals. A tight game saw the Caps run out as 1-0 winners from the Garden. On Tuesday, they were shut out once again, this time by the Oilers.
Goals from Trent Frederic and Adam Henrique gave the Canadian side a 2-0 win. Meanwhile, their goaltender, Stuart Skinner, made 30 saves and handed the Rangers their 3rd straight shutout loss at home.
This loss sees them script an unwanted record. The Rangers are now the first team in NHL history to get shut out in the opening 3 home games of the season.

This 180-minute goal drought at MSG is the second-longest to start a season at home. The now-defunct Pittsburgh Pirates of 1928 went 187 minutes without a goal at home to open a season. Their streak was longer due to overtime.
Of all the modern-era teams that still exist, the previous longest home goal drought was 155 minutes, set by the Florida Panthers in 2001.
Social media reacts to Rangers making unwanted piece of NHL history
The New York Rangers are struggling at home. The Metropolitan Division side lost their 3rd straight game at home without scoring a goal on Tuesday, sparking concern among their fanbase.

Fans on social media would take shots at the team for this record. While some did sympathize with them, many trolled them. One user wrote, “they should be refunding fans” as a means to apologize to the fans for their poor showing at home.

On the road, the Rangers have scored 10 goals and conceded just 1. Their next 2 games are on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens.
Mika Zibanejad at a loss for words following Rangers poor start at home
The home-field advantage is currently not working for the New York Rangers. A 3rd successive shutout loss at Madison Square Garden saw the New York Rangers make unwanted NHL history. Center player Mika Zibanejad was lost for words following their 2-0 loss on Tuesday.

The Swedish international, who has scored 1 goal this season, expressed that he did not know whether he should laugh or cry with the offensive struggles of the team at home in front of their fans.
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I honestly don’t know. We’ve got to keep going.
Mika Zibanejad told the reporters after the game

Meanwhile, J.T. Miller urged everyone not to blow this development out of proportion. The new captain of the Rangers expressed that it was just game five of the season and that things would turn around eventually.
Let’s not make this bigger than it is. It’s game five. A lot to like about our game. It’s a unique situation but let’s not blow this out of proportion here.
J.T. Miller told the reporters
"First of all, let's not make this bigger than it is. It's game five. A lot to like about our game. It's a unique situation but let's not blow this out of proportion here"

The 2-3-0 Rangers will be on the road next. After two games in Canada, they will return home to face the Minnesota Wild and the San Jose Sharks. Following that, they will be on a 4-game road trip once again.
