The first team in the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs is decided. The President’s Trophy winners, New York Rangers booked their place in the next round as they swept the Washington Capitals 4-0 in the best-of-seven series.

During the regular season, both teams had different forms. While the New York Rangers kept on cruising in their division, the Washington Capitals almost missed out from the playoffs for a second straight season. Once they reached the knockout phase, fans were optimistic that the Caps could pull off an upset series win.

Unfortunately for the Capitals, their opponents were just too hot to handle for them. The Rangers went on to outscore them 15-7 in the four-game sweep.

One major issue for the Capitals was the performance of their captain Alex Ovechkin. The veteran forward failed to register a single point in the entire series. This is the first time in his legendary career where he failed to collect a single point in a playoff series.

After the game, Ovechkin opened up about the loss and claimed it was “tough” to loss this series. He though admitted that he “didn’t play well” in his playoff run.

It’s always tough to lose a series, especially [when] we have pretty good chances. We just didn’t score. Our line didn’t score lots of goals. Blame me. I didn’t play well.

Social media reactions to Rangers sweeping Capitals

A meeting with the New York Rangers was always going to be difficult one for the Washington Capitals who had just scrapped through to the playoffs. Fans on social media have attacked them for this poor performance while many have trolled them.

Some fans pointed out how the Detroit Red Wings or the Pittsburgh Penguins would have put a much better showing than this. These two teams were the once whom the Capitals had edged out to set up a first round matchup against the Rangers. Meanwhile, one angry supporter on X used the word “pathetic” to describe the performance of the 2018 Stanley Cup champions.

The Rangers will now face off against the winners of the Carolina Hurricanes–New York Islanders series. At the moment, Canes are leading the 3-1. The Islanders will need to pull off a memorable comeback from here on if they were to set up a rivalry showdown against the Rangers.
