Since losing out on Juan Soto to their crosstown rivals New York Mets, the New York Yankees have been in an aggressive mode in the offseason. After missing out on Kyle Tucker, the Bronx Bombers have now officially acquired former National League MVP Cody Bellinger.
The two-time All-Star was one of the names the Yankees were targeting after failing to re-sign Soto. On Tuesday, this rumored move became official when the Yankees traded right-handed reliever, Cody Poteet in exchange to bring Bellinger in the Bronx.
As per reports from MLB.com, the Yankees are receiving $5 million to offset Bellinger’s remaining contract, which has two years and $52.5 million remaining.
The 29-year-old had been on the radar for the Yankees for several years. However, after the move of Soto to the Mets, the Yankees intensified their efforts to finally land him.
The ex-Los Angeles Dodgers star follows in the footsteps of his father, Clay Bellinger. His father Clay played for the Yankees from 1999 to 2001 and won two World Series rings with them.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Yankees told Bellinger that he would be playing in center field for the Yankees. This means that captain Aaron Judge will go back to right field next year after he spent the 2024 season in center field.

This is now the second trade done by the Yankees in the past few days. Before landing Bellinger, the team roped in left-handed pitcher Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers and gave away starting pitcher Nestor Cortes.
Social media reacts to Cody Bellinger’s trade to NY Yankees
After losing Juan Soto, it was expected that the New York Yankees would target some big names as they shifted their focus to Plan B. The name of Cody Bellinger was also thrown in the mix as the Bronx Bombers lined up some potential players. At that moment, very few thought that this deal could actually become real.

Fans on X have been left hyped up after Bellinger’s move to the Yankees became official. Many fans praised GM Brian Cashman for this move. One fan wrote, “And just like that the Yankees are back” while reacting to this.

This. Is the most dangerous signing for any and all AL East teams. He had a fairly even spray chart at rigley but will absolutely DOMINATE in NY.

Like honestly I’d be more scared to pitch to him than Judge 90% of the time.
Such a great off season so far without spending 800 million on one player.
