The New York Yankees received a major blow on Sunday when their former star Juan Soto decided to ditch them and join the New York Mets. Soto agreed on a historic $765,000,000 deal with the Yankees’ cross-town rivals. With him now off the market, the Yanks have turned their attention to others. Nolan Arenado is one name that has been brought up.
As per reports, the Yankees are expressing interest to land the 8-time MLB All-Star. Arenado, who is currently a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, has become a subject of trade talks in recent weeks.
Arenado joined the Cardinals in 2021 from the Colorado Rockies, hoping for a deep postseason run with the team. So far, that has not transpired with the Cardinals as they have suffered early eliminations on two occasions with him on the team.
The Cardinals are open to trading the 10-time Gold Glove winner. He is also ready to shift from the third base position to first base for his new team.
As per Katie Woo of The Athletic, Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak “intends to try” and trade Arenado. While taking part in the Winter Meetings, the executive claimed that this could be the best move for both the team and the player.
The Yankees, who have now missed on Soto, are considered one of the favorites to try and land him. The one thing that can become an obstacle in this deal is the no-trade clause of Arenado. However, the player has expressed his desire to play in the World Series and could waive this away if the talks advance further.

In the 2024 season, Arenado slammed 16 home runs and had 71 RBI. He batted with an average of .272 as the Cardinals finished with a 83-79 record and missed out on the postseason.
Ex-MLB GM outlines strategy for Yankees following Juan Soto miss
The move of Juan Soto to the New York Mets is going to be painful for the New York Yankees. The team though will need to move forward from this. An ex-MLB GM has now shared his strategy regarding what the team must do after missing out on Soto.
After losing Soto, the Yankees can now use the money they intended to on several key players. As per Dan O’Dowd, the former GM of the Colorado Rockies, the Yanks should sign four players.
According to the MLB analyst, the team should first sign Christian Walker as first baseman. After that, the team should enter into trade talks for Cody Bellinger and Nolan Arenado. For his last step, the 65-year-old suggests that the team should sign Jurickson Profar.
What Dan O'Dowd thinks the Yankees should do:

The Yankees were previously suggested to go for Willy Adames. The 29-year-old ended up joining the San Francisco Giants on a 7-year $182 million deal.
Other names the Yankees could target are Pete Alonso and Teoscar Hernandez. Recent reports claimed that the Yanks could enter the race for Hernandez if they missed out on Soto. With the Soto scenario coming true, the Los Angeles Dodgers could face some competition in re-signing the 2024 Home Run Derby champion.
