Giannis Antetokounmpo has been on a tear this season despite showing interest to leave the Milwaukee Bucks this past offseason.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a freak of nature, using his massive 7′ 4″ wingspan and long legs to essentially take two steps at the most to lay up or dunk the ball from outside the restricted area.
He has used those tricks ever since he came into the league, and they have made him unstoppable when inside the 3-point line. With that, he has amassed 2 regular-season MVPs, a Defensive Player of the Year award, a Finals MVP, and countless other individual accolades.
Those freakish athletic traits also helped him and his Milwaukee Bucks win the 2021 NBA Championship. The superstar has also used his skills to help his adopted nation, Greece, take the Bronze medal in the recently concluded EuroBasket 2025.
Sometimes, the pace of his movements makes it hard for officials or opposing players to track his steps. During their game against the New York Knicks, he attempted to do the same.
But this time, it was slower and easier to spot on video replay. Clips surfaced on social media revealing that as Giannis Antetokounmpo crossed the 3-point line, he gathered the ball, hesitated to avoid Karl-Anthony Towns, and then laid the ball in.
The problem is that in doing so, the 30-year-old did not take his usual two-step move. Instead, it seems he took five steps before jumping off on a fadeaway while scoring.

What’s your call on this? pic.twitter.com/qEKtSEOVYt
Even though there is confusion about what constitutes a travel when a player gathers the basketball, this was too egregious to miss. Despite that, the officials did not call this travel.
Fans fume at NBA for not calling Giannis Antetokounmpo’s travel
Basketball fans have been keeping an eye on officiating and how it has been impacting the NBA over the past few years. There have been calls to stop favoring certain teams and players, and to ask the league to call certain obvious fouls.
This season, the only point of contention so far has been the disproportionate foul calls the Los Angeles Lakers and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have been continuously receiving.
In Giannis Antetokounmpo’s case, fans were left fuming as his 5-step travel was too obvious. They believed it was either that the officials were too ignorant to spot it, or they intentionally allowed him to carry on. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The NBA needs to add an additional referee to each game that looks for nothing other than:

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been motivated to prove why he is one of the best players in the world, and he has been exceptional so far. Apart from this egregious travel, the Greek Freak had a pretty good performance against the Knicks.
Giannis Antetokounmpo reiterates his passion for Milwaukee
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been averaging 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 assists after the first 3 games in the 2025-26 season. That has helped his Milwaukee Bucks register a 2-1 record.

These numbers usually tend to indicate that the player in question is pouring his heart out on the court. It is a major prove-it point as the father of 4 was believed to have wanted to join the New York Knicks, who they played tonight.
Halfway through the 3rd quarter, the 6′ 11″ star blocked a shot at one end, ran back down the other, gathered a rebound, and dunked it. After that, he was seen gesturing that this was his city.

His effort saw the Bucks win 121-111, pushing them to 3-1, and establishing themselves as the dark horse in the East. If Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to prove his loyalty to the city of Milwaukee, the Bucks might be in a good situation come playoff time.
