In a surprising move on Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers picked up forward Kasperi Kapanen and added more power to their offense. This comes after he was placed on waivers by his former team, St. Louis Blues.
The 28-year-old joined the NHL as a first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2014 NHL draft. He failed to make the cut at the Penguins and was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Since the 2017-18 season, Kapanen has established himself as a regular starter. During the 2018-19 season, he enjoyed his most prolific year as he scored 20 goals and picked up 24 assists to take his season tally to 44 points in 78 league games.
He was traded back to the Penguins during the 2020-21 season. He spent two-and-a-half years with the team before being claimed off the waivers by the Blues.
In his time with the Blues, he scored 14 goals and picked up 22 assists. With 85 goals and 124 assists (209 points) in 470 games, Kapanen has established himself as a formidable right winger.

This move from the Oilers came after they ended up losing 3-0 against the Montreal Canadiens. They though went on to win 5-2 against the Ottawa Senators later and bounced back from that setback.
Social media reacts to Oilers picking up Kasperi Kapanen
The news of the Edmonton Oilers picking up Kasperi Kapanen from the waivers has sent shockwaves across the NHL community. This was something many did not see coming from the five-time Stanley Cup champions.
Fans on social media have thus been left divided with their opinions. While some claimed it was a great move for the team, some made fun of the team and trolled them. Some were genuinely left confused by this transaction in the NHL on Tuesday afternoon.
Fans would also take a dig at the Oilers for their moves before the start of the season. The Blues submitted two offer sheets for two Oilers players, Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. The Canadian outfit declined to match that offer which resulted in them joining the Blues.

He has only scored one goal in ten games this season so far. How much of an impact will Kapanen eventually make now on the Oilers team remains to be seen. He could make his debut for the team on Thursday night when they welcome the Minnesota Wild at Rogers Place.
