One of the biggest talking points in the NHL at the moment is the contract situation of Connor McDavid. The forward is now in the final year of his deal and will become an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) if he does not sign a new deal. The Edmonton Oilers’ management is not too concerned about it and expressed confidence in him signing an extension soon.
McDavid signed an 8-year, $100 million ($12.5 million Average Annual Value) deal in 2017. The 2025-26 season will be the final year of his contract. Since the start of July, the Canadian international has become eligible to sign a contract extension.
However, he is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal and is taking his time to decide what’s best for his future. These actions from him have left some fans worried. The Oilers captain, though, did express that he wants to win things in Edmonton.
On Wednesday, General Manager Stan Bowman commented on the contract situation of McDavid. The GM would reflect on the forward’s comment of winning in Edmonton and expressed confidence in him. The 52-year-old trusts the word of McDavid.
I just go by what Connor said, and that’s that he wants nothing more than to win in Edmonton. I take him at his word. He’s going through his own process, and you have to understand that and respect it, and I do. When he’s ready, he’ll be ready.
Stan Bowman told the reporters as per NHL.com

The upcoming season will be McDavid’s 11th season with the Oilers. He joined the team in 2015 as the No.1 draft pick that year. As per reports, he is open to signing a short-term deal.
Connor McDavid has all the faith in the Oilers winning in the upcoming season
As the training camp for the upcoming season gets underway, Connor McDavid still has not signed a new deal. He recently once again spoke on his future and claimed that he has all the faith in the world in winning with the team in the 2025-26 season.

McDavid and the Oilers would hope that the third time is a lucky charm for them. In the past two seasons, they have suffered back-to-back defeats in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers.
After coming back from a 3-0 deficit and forcing Game 7, the Oilers lost the final game in the 2023-24 season. Last year, they won Game 1 but ended up losing 5-1 in Game 6 and suffered another defeat. Despite this, the Oilers captain is confident about winning with his team this year.
My wife and I obviously love being here in Edmonton and we have every intention to win here in Edmonton and I have all the faith in the world in the 25-26 season and beyond that still remains to be seen.

Flames fans troll Oilers with Connor McDavid chants regarding his contract situation
Ahead of the new season, the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames took part in a rookie game on Sunday. During this, the Flames fans would troll their rivals and start a cheeky chant regarding Connor McDavid.

In this home-and-home series between the two rivals, the two teams featured their rookies. Not a single NHL player was represented in this game.
The Flames fans, though, decided to poke some fun at the Oilers. In the middle of the game, they would start chanting “McDavid’s leaving” during the rookie game.
