As the NBA Playoffs have tipped off, fans have been all over the postseason news, not looking to miss out on anything. There were quite some interesting matchups in the first round. The Lakers taking on their last year’s Conference Finals opponent, the Nuggets.
On the other hand, the Celtics are facing the Heat, who beat them last year to advance to the playoffs. Other entertaining matchups include Clippers versus the Mavs, Suns versus the Wolves, and more.
Attendance in arenas has been steadily increasing, with teams often organizing contests during halftime or timeouts where a random fan is selected for various challenges. In one such instance in OKC, a lucky fan completed a challenge and won $20,000 by making a half-court shot, much to the delight of the crowd.
The Thunder fan’s triumphant half-court shot sparked cheers from the crowd, as he clinched some bag in prize money. This exciting moment came after witnessing his favorite team secure a 2-0 lead over the Pelicans. The Thunder organization has previously offered varying sums of money for similar half-court shot challenges, but $20K remains a notable prize.
NBA teams have a history of offering half-court shot challenges for fans
While the OKC Thunder’s $20K half-court shot prize is significant, other NBA teams have offered even larger sums. Recently, a Lakers fan nailed a half-court shot to win $100,000, while the Phoenix Suns have hosted challenges with prizes exceeding $77K in the past. These lucrative opportunities make participating in these challenges a dream for every NBA fan in the audience.
However, the process for picking a fan is totally random. But the Thunder might have to look into a better selection of fans, as they’ve had two fans hit the same half-court shots in the last month or so. Not only that but in the last two years, four Thunder fans have won the $20K reward. The organization really seems to be rewarding this sum of money casually.
There have been instances where fans were promised prizes but didn’t receive them, often due to past experiences in basketball. For example, a former college basketball player made an incredible shot worth a million dollars for the Bulls franchise, but wasn’t rewarded. This was because of his prior basketball experience. However, rules have become more lenient since then, and now any fan, regardless of their basketball background, will be rewarded if they make the shot.
