Novak Djokovic made his fifth Olympic appearance in Paris, and knowing that it could end up being his final appearance, he gave nothing but his best. And the result was a straight-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

The win helped the Serb take his revenge on the now six-time Grand Slam champion following his second consecutive defeat to him in the Wimbledon final. Djokovic now holds a 5-4 head-to-head record over the World No.1, who, in their last encounter, knocked him out in the semifinal of this year’s US Open.

The Olympic win, Djokovic himself called, was the biggest achievement of his career. On two occasions, in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, Juan Martin del Potro became the reason behind the end of his campaigns. WTA player from Serbia, Olga Danilovic, during her interview with the Tennis Insider Club podcast, said Djokovic’s Olympic victory was an emotional moment for everyone in their country.

These Olympics that he won, I think it was the most emotional day in our whole country. I feel like everyone was crying.

Djokovic, however, doesn’t live in Serbia as his family recently relocated to Athens. If reports are to be believed, then the reason behind his relocation could possibly be the ongoing student protest against the Serbian government.

In Athens, the 24-time Grand Slam champion participated in the first edition of the Hellenic Championship and ended the tournament not before defeating Lorenzo Musetti in the final. Djokovic took home two ATP 250 titles this year. Apart from Athens, he won the Geneva Open and became the third man after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer to reach the 100-title tally.

Djokovic also wants to play the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After his Athens win, he revealed his dream is to hang up his racket in the quadrennial event.

Djokovic also made it to the final of the Miami Open as well as the semifinals of all four Majors this year. In Miami, Jakub Mensik denied him his 41st Masters 1000 trophy. In the Majors, a hamstring injury forced him to give the walkover to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open, while Jannik Sinner knocked him out at the French Open and Wimbledon.

I’m like, okay, I cannot miss one ball. My goal is to play like a superhero, you know, today. Because I wanted it so much, and I felt like, I don’t know, to give him, like, you know, I’m not going to disappoint you.

Olga Danilovic said on the Tennis Insider Club podcast

The pair defeated China’s Zhang Zhizhen and Qinwen Zheng. Djokovic also paired up with Danilovic in the revamped US Open mixed doubles, but they ended up losing their first-round match to Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev.

So, that was like a really bucket list moment for me. Okay, you know, when we were walking on the court, and I remember I saw a big screen, and I saw like Serbia, and okay, we play for Serbia, and everything is like more passionate.

Olga Danilovic added

Danilovic finished the season as No. 67 with a 23-17 win-loss record. The two-time ATP titlist failed to win a title this year. The 24-year-old ended her season at the Japan Open with a three-set defeat to Tereza Valentova in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic finished the season at the Hellenic Championships. He skipped the ATP Finals for the second consecutive time.
