Olivier Giroud speaks after his wonder goal against Atletico Madrid
French international Olivier Giroud has said after the match that the sole intention of the side was to look to register a win at all costs. The match was played out at a neutral venue at Bucharest but it was extremely important for Chelsea to get a confidence booster against a formidable side.
However Olivier Giroud’s goal itself came with a little bit of controversy as every goal does nowadays with the introduction of the video assistant referee. It appeared as if Olivier Giroud was in an offside position before his shot and that meant a big delay by the VAR before confirming the goal.
But thankfully for Chelsea fans Atletico Madrid player Hermoso got the touch before the ball landed at Giroud’s feet and that meant the goal stood. It looked as if Mason Mount got a touch in the middle bit that was not the case.
We came here with strong intentions to win the game, play our game and we know how we could give them trouble offensively,” he told BT Sport. “We have been strong at the back in the defensive shape and very pleased with the win, it was a deserved win tonight.
“We know the importance of the away goal in European cups so that is why I was pleased to help the team win the game, we managed it well and we were confident but faced a great team and I think we were very committed and knew their main strengths. We dealt with it but we have to stay focused and complete the job.
