Ollie Pope, England’s vice-captain in Test cricket and the one who bats at number three, scored a century in the second Test against West Indies and led England to a 241-run victory against West Indies in Nottingham. In that game, England scored 400 runs in a single day which was astonishing.

Ahead of the third Test match, Pope said that the England batting line-up was re-energized under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, and that every batter has been playing their natural game and looking to score runs. Pope also claimed that his team want to be ‘ruthless’ as a batting unit in Test cricket an also went on to say that the England batting line-up might score 500 or 600 in a day during a Test match soon.

We want to be as ruthless as we can as a batting unit, but we still play the way we do because that is our natural game. Obviously, being ruthless is being part of Test cricket as well. Sometimes we might score 280-300 in a day but that is OK and probably because we are reading situations. There might also be a day where we go and get 500 to 600 at some point in the future as well.

McCullum and Stokes have given the license to the England batters to be ultra aggressive and take the attack to the opposition bowlers in Test cricket. Ollie Pope has been a revelation at the number three position in Test cricket.

He scored a sensational century on a turning track in Hyderabad during the Test series against India and was sensational against West Indies in Nottingham, where he scored 121 runs off 167 balls. England registered a comfortable victory against West Indies and have the series locked in at 2-0.

Pope has got the technique to survive the new ball if wickets fall early. Moreover, he is a busy player and can take the attack to the opposition, once he is set on the crease.

Given the way that the England batters are playing in Test cricket, it will not take them much time to score 500 or 600 runs in a single day. McCullum and Stokes have created a perfect environment for the England batters to flourish and play their natural game.
