29-year old Sajjad Ganjzadeh of Iran is a four-time World Championships Gold Medalist. But an Olympic Medal was eluding the man from the middle-east for quite a long time, since Karate was never a part of the Olympics. Sajjad Ganjzadeh was born on the 4th of January in 1992. The World no.2 was born in the capital of Iran – Tehran. He took to the sport at a very tender age of 10. He had actually been inspired by his brother Musa. Ganjzadeh is involved in philanthropic activities as well. He played a huge role in reaching out to the needy during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Sajjad Ganjzadeh’s big break came at the 2013 Asian Championships that took place in Dubai. He won the Gold medal in the men’s Kumite, 84kg category. He has one Silver medal, and one Bronze medal at the Asian Championships besides this. Ganjzadeh won Silver at the 2015 Asian Championships in Yokohoma and Bronze at the 2019 Asian Championships in Tashkent.

He has won several accolades in team events as well. At the Islamic Solidarity Games in 2017 Baku, Sajjad Ganjzadeh won the Gold medal.

He has one Asian Games Gold medal to his name, which he won at the most recent edition of the games, in 2018, Jakarta. Besides this Ganjzadeh has one individual Gold medal at the World Championships in 2016 Linz, and three more Gold medals in the team events across 2014, 2016 and 2018.

And finally, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics he struck Gold by defeating Targe Hamedi of Saudi Arabia in a freak Gold medal bout. Hamedi’s illegal kick had knocked out Sajjad Ganjzadeh which resulted in a disqualification leading to the Iranian’s victory.
