At the recent World Aquatics Championship, swimmer Ariarne Titmus set a new world record. She finished the 400 m freestyle race as the winner in under four minutes. A race with top stars saw Titmus set the record with three minutes and fifty-five seconds.
She swam across the pool in this race and broke the world record which was set just four months ago. Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh set this record of three minutes and fifty-six seconds. This historic achievement came on the first day of the World Aquatics Championships as Titmus emerged on top.
She overcame the likes of McIntosh and America’s dominant swimmer Katie Ledecky to clinch gold. “I think it’s about trusting yourself,” she told the media persons after her winner. The 22-year-old went on to express how she tries to swim like the little girl she was when she went up against Ledecky.
Her opponent Ledecky has made herself one of the great swimmers of this generation. The 26-year-old recorded her also recorded her best time during this event. The seven-time Olympic gold medalist who has dominated this sport for a long time, has now lost to her rival for the third time running. Titmus’ previous two wins over her came in the world in 2019 and in 2021 during the Tokyo Games.
Ariarne Titmus overcomes intense competition to set historic world record

The biggest satisfaction for any athlete is either winning titles or breaking multiple records. Ariane Titmus may be behind her rival Katie Ledecky in the medal’ and titles’ count, but she now has a world record over her. With Ledecky in one lane and 16-year-old rising star Summer McIntosh in the other, this race was dubbed by many as the “Race of the Century”.
The pressure certainly was on all these three great athletes. It was Titmus who kept her cool and came away as the winner over her two fierce rivals. Another interesting aspect here is that it was not the only world record broken during this span. France’ Leon Marchand took down the 15-year record of Michael Phelps in the 400 m by finishing the race in four minutes and two seconds.
These two individuals now hold the world record for the best time in a 400m race. The two swimmers will now be preparing for the Summer Olympics in Paris next season as the competition gets stiff. For Titmus, she will have to be at her very best if she wants to upset Ledecky once again, at the grand stage in 2024.
