The Swimming Hall of Fame located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has officially announced the class of 2023 which includes the name of legendary Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Phelps retired from the Olympics after the 2016 Rio Games and has won 28 medals in his career. Out of these 28 medals, Phelps has a record 23 gold medals.

In order to qualify for the Hall of Fame induction, a player needs to be officially retired for four years or to the least, one Olympic quadrennial. For players above the age of 30, there may be considerations for a special induction if they meet the required eligibility requirements.

Besides Phelps, the legendary Paralympic swimmer Trischa Zorn-Hudson also got inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, after being inducted into the US Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame in 2022. Zorn-Hudson has won a record 55 medals throughout her career, spanning from 1980 to 2004.

Another Olympian, Missy Franklin has also been inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Franklin, who retired in 2018, had won four golds and one bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics while just in high school. She further went ahead to break the female record of winning six golds at the 2013 Worlds. Injuries had caused significant setbacks in her career, which forced her to retire early.

Another notable figure to be inducted into the list is the Japanese star swimmer Kosuke Kitajima. Kitajima had won seven medals in four Olympic appearances. The Japanese swimmer had absolutely swept through the 100m and 200m events in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

The list also includes Cesar Cielo who is Brazil’s first and only Olympic gold medal winner in Swimming. He still remains the world record holder for 50m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Games.
