On Monday (April 29), Tunisian star Ons Jabeur dominated throughout her fourth-round match against Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, which lasted for just 68 minutes. The former champion stormed past the ninth seed with a scoreline of 6-0, 6-4 on the Manolo Santana court at the Mutua Madrid Open.
Jabeur has now advanced into her second quarterfinal this season. She also secured her quarterfinal berth for the third time in a WTA 1000 event on clay since 2020. The 29-year-old is only behind World No.1 Iga Swiatek who has reached four quarterfinals since 2020.
The win also improved Jabeur’s head-to-head record against Ostapenko 3-2. This made Jabeur the first player to secure a 6-0 win in the opening set against a top-10 player since 2021, when Aryna Sabalenka did the same against Ashleigh Barty.
Before the easy win, Jabeur had to overcome two players in three sets in the previous rounds. She started her campaign against Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, beating her 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Next, she knocked out Leylah Annie Fernandez 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
The 29-year-old’s first quarter-final match this season was in the Abu Dhabi Open, where Beatriz Haddad Maia knocked her out in two sets. Ostapenko, on the other hand, lifted her first title of the season by winning the Linz Open in February by beating Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets.
Jelena Ostapenko annoyed after loud cheers from Ons Jabeur’s husband and coach
Ons Jabeur did not let Jelena Ostapenko take any control over the first set, not letting the Latvian win a game. Though Ostapenko started gaining momentum in the second set, Jabeur did not let her capitalize much on it.
Along with the crowd, Jabeur’s coach and husband Karim Kamoun cheered loudly for her, but it ended up annoying Ostapenko. Though the Latvian tried not to react at first, the constant noise led her to make a gesture toward them.

Kamoun is a former fencer (from 2003 to 2011). He used to do the job of fencing coach as well but left it to become his wife’s fitness coach in 2017. They have been married since 2015.
Jabeur is a former champion at Caja Magica, winning the title in 2022 by beating Jessica Pegula 7-5, 0-6, 6-2. She also created history by becoming the first African player to win a WTA 1000 title.
