Tunisian ace Ons Jabeur has been enjoying incredible succes at the Roland Garros. With four consecutive wins, she is climbing the ladder for greater success at the clay major tournament. However, despite the victories her heart still remains with the kids caught in the midst of the terrible Gaza conflict.
The kids have made the WTA World No.9 their hero, following her matches, despite being cut off from TV or the internet for months. For months Jabeur has been vocal about the untold suffering caused by Israeli attacks on Gaza civilians.
The conflict has been for years, but escalated after a surprise attack by Hamas (a Palestinian military group) in Israel which left many dead. In retaliation, Israel caused more harm that has caught the attention of several international communities.
Nonetheless, Jabeur has been enjoying a good run of form at the French Open. The 29-year-old defeated American Sachia Vickery in a straight set, following it up with a comprehensive victory over Camila Osorio 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the second round. She defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the third round to reach the round of 16 of the French Open, before beating Clara Tauson in straight sets in the fourth round.
Yet, she remains sad about the news kids in Gaza going through horrifying sorrows due to ongoing conflict. Jabeur revealed that it’s unfair the world speak less of the situation.
I'm pretty sad to see the news every day, and I honestly try not to be on social media because it's horrifying videos of what's happening in Gaza right now. I wish the world could speak more because it's really unfair what's happening. These kids, women, men suffering. We are in 2024, and it's very sad to see that a lot of countries are silent about it.Ons Jabeur said via (Rome Press)
Meanwhile, Jabeur will face Coco Gauff in the quarterfinal of the Roland Garros. The Tunisian will be hoping to get past her last year’s quarterfinals exit at the competition.
Ons Jabeur reveals lack of progress since becoming Global Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP)
Ons Jabeur became the Global Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s WFPPF in February to help in providing aid to Gaza civilians. However, she has revealed that she is experiencing frustration and a lack of progress in making sure the work is done.
She urged that more people need to speak out about the poverty and deprivation Palestinians go through every day.
So I'm trying to send the great energy helping as a WFP Ambassador trying to help as much as I can, but definitely it makes me very sad and angry to see that nothing is moving and nothing is really happening.Ons Jabeur at a post-match presser during the Roland Garros
The World No.9 added that she wishes only peace in Gaza. This is considering the fact that the situation being far from getting back to normal at the moment.
