Ons Jabeur has taken an indefinite break from tennis. For the past two years, the two-time Wimbledon finalist has been struggling with injuries and a slump in form, and so she has finally decided to step back to “heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living“.

Her announcement was met with positive reactions, but there were obviously trolls, one of whom mocked her on X. Jabeur noticed the tweet and decided to clap back at the user.

Imagine being so empty inside that someone else’s struggles make you laugh. I’ve noticed your bullying more than once, and it’s sad to see. I truly hope you find the healing and peace you clearly need.

The user told her to appreciate her life as she is making millions of dollars by playing tennis, that she doesn’t have to play through injuries, as she has the freedom to choose to stop playing while being injured. Jabeur, in response, said she does appreciate her life.

I never said I don’t appreciate my life . I do, deeply. But gratitude doesn’t cancel out struggle. I chose to speak honestly, not for sympathy, but to stay true to myself. Everyone fights battles you don’t see. Wishing you the same grace and empathy you expect from others.

The user then cited Emil Ruusuvuori‘s example, pointing out how he hasn’t made a lot of money compared to Jabeur but decided to step away from tennis when he was struggling. Then the user wished her happiness both on and off the court. Jabeur wrote that she respects his views, but also pointed out that money doesn’t solve every problem.

Both Jabeur and the user, however, buried their hatchet as their conversation on X continued. The user also invited her for coffee or tea and more conversation whenever she is in New York City for the US Open. Jabeur liked the idea.

Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa react to Ons Jabeur’s decision to take a break

Ons Jabeur is best friends with Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa, and they have often shared hilarious clips of their time together with the fans. So when Jabeur announced her break, both Sabalenka and Badosa dropped a comment on Instagram.

This year, no player on the WTA tour has performed better than Sabalenka. She has reached seven finals so far and won three titles.

Those finals also include the Australian Open and the French Open, both of which she lost to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, respectively. At Wimbledon, her campaign was ended by eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals.

Badosa last lifted a title at the 2024 Citi Open. In the Grand Slam events this year, Badosa lost in the semifinals of the Australian Open to Sabalenka, to Daria Kasatkina in the third round of the French Open, and suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon, losing the match to Katie Boulter.

Jabeur, on the other hand, was last seen in action at the recently concluded Wimbledon. The three-time Grand Slam finalist couldn’t complete her first-round match, giving a walkover to Viktoriya Tomova.

It was the seventh time this season that the Tunisian ace failed to go beyond the first round. She has made it to three quarterfinals this year but has failed to progress beyond this round.

Jabeur hasn’t won a title since the 2023 Ningbo Open. In 2023, she had reached three finals, including at Wimbledon, but lost the match in straight sets to Marketa Vondrousova.
