The biggest boxing fight has always happened in Las Vegas over several decades. However, Saudi Arabia has recently stolen the spotlight, creating the biggest fights in the sport. This is because they have brought the biggest fighters into one place with their finances. Similarly, they are set to conduct their first event in Las Vegas. Furthermore, Oscar De La Hoya showed his apprehension towards this and sent an indirect message to Turki Alalshikh.
The first event Saudi Arabia will host overseas features Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov on August 3. Alalshikh spoke about the event and what it meant for the sport. He also stated that Saudi Arabia’s goal will aim to continue hosting quality events worldwide, which will help boxing grow. While this is great for the sport, De La Hoya doesn’t seem to agree with this.
No promoter is coming into my territory and think they can take over 'my' sport!! This is war!!!Oscar De La Hoya via X
The former champion suggested that Alalshikh was an intruder in boxing trying to take over his sport. De La Hoya also declared that Saudi Arabia’s Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority had invaded the boxing circuit in the country by coming to Las Vegas.
This prompted him to declare war against him, and he even stated that Alalshikh knew nothing about boxing. Oscar De La Hoya also mentioned that he was a fighter first and wouldn’t tolerate somebody else coming to his city or country to take over boxing. His Excellency has not responded to the comments. However, it must lead one to question whether the Saudis would ever work with De La Hoya.
Oscar De la Hoya throws shade at Eddie Hearn
Alalshikh was not the only person De La Hoya threw shade at recently. The Olympic Gold Medal winner also targeted his rival, Eddie Hearn. After Ryan Garcia defeated Devin Haney, the Golden Boy promotions regained their formal glory. As such, De La Hoya decided to fire a shot at Hearn after he predicted Haney’s comeback.
‘KingRy’ managed to knock down Haney three times for the first time in his career and won via majority decision. After the beatdown, Hearn was quite disappointed with his fighter’s performance but still complimented his warrior spirit. He also stated that Haney’s career had a long way to go and that he would come back strong.
De La Hoya responded to this by pointing out that Hearn had no fighting experience and wouldn’t know anything about it. Furthermore, he compared Hearn to Don King, who had also never entered the ring. After this, De La Hoya flaunted that Haney would be affected after that fight for a while and might not return like before. It appears De La Hoya had the last laugh against Hearn this time around.
