The boxing world recently witnessed an intense scene. But this time, the intensity is not bound by a ring but by law. The bad blood between Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez has escalated to a legal battle. The Golden Boy Promotions founder is suing his former star boxer for defamation.

De La Hoya had recently stated that he would sue Canelo Alvarez for defamation. He kept his word and recently posted his legal letter issued to Alvarez. He detailed that Alvarez’s accusations defamed him and his company. De La Hoya further stated that Alvarez should publicly retract his statements.

We hereby demand that Canelo cease and desist from making any further false and preposterous allegations against Oscar and Golden Boy. We also demand that Canelo immediately retract his allegations that Oscar stole from the boxers…Oscar and Golden Boy reserve all rights to sue Canelo for the damages caused by these defamatory accusations, including punitive damages designed to ensure Canelo learns his lesson.

This whole drama stemmed from Canelo’s profanity-laced rant recently at their face-off press conference. De La Hoya mocked Canelo at the press conference, and the enraged champion unleashed fury. He got up into De La Hoya’s face before security separated them. Alvarez publicly accused De La Hoya of being a thief and stealing fighter’s money.

What started as pre-fight drama degenerated into an unseemly legal battle. Canelo Alvarez is set to fight with Jamie Munguia. Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotion has signed Munguia. Given the circumstances, this fight would probably be a proxy fight between Alvarez and De La Hoya.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has seen his fair share of wild pre-fight antics. This week’s bizarre Oscar De La Hoya-Canelo Alvarez blowup took even him by surprise. Hearn believed that Alvarez would not have hesitated to punch De La Hoya on stage.

Eddie Hearn recently talked to The Stomping Ground. He expressed his reaction to the drama between De La Hoya and Alvarez. Hearn firmly believed that if not separated, Alvarez would have ‘chinned’ De La Hoya. He also talked about the bitterness of their relationship.

I spoke to Saul [Canelo Alvarez] last night. He will smash [De La Hoya], he will chin him. He wouldn't hesitate to chin him. I think he'd love to. But that's a very, very bitter relationship. You heard Saul's comments, which are damning and horrific for Golden Boy. But they are what they are.

Eddie Hearn’s assessment gives an insight into the relationship between Alvarez and De La Hoya. This weekend, Jamie Munguia will face Canelo Alvarez in a boxing match. The stakes are high, and the tensions are rising. Only time will tell who will walk out of the ring as the super middleweight champion.
