Nowadays, NBA fans often say that the league has ‘gone too soft.’ With the look of it, it does seem so. However, this wasn’t the case back in the day. For instance, former NBA player Vernon Maxwell, shared an intriguing story during his playing days in the NBA. Maxwell was a confrontational person with a short temper in his playing days.

On the other hand, unless you irritated him, Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon was more of a gentle giant. Maxwell recounted his altercation with Olajuwon in the locker room. This was during an interview on the All The Smoke podcast, which features Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. Maxwell revealed on the Show that Olajuwon ‘slapped the sh*t out of him.’

At the age of 24, Vernon Maxwell joined the Rockets in 1989. He remained a member of the squad until the 1994–1995 season ended. In addition to being a fantastic three-point shooter and one of the league’s top perimeter defenders at the time, he was also known for his fiery personality. Along with Olajuwon, the pair went on to help the Rockets win its first pro sports title.

Maxwell was a key member of the starting shooting guard rotation, but Olajuwon was the team’s and the league’s MVP. The very next season, Vernon Maxwell’s Rockets career ended. This was when he left the team during its first-round series versus the Utah Jazz, amid its championship run.

In an interview on “Gil’s Arena,” Vernon Maxwell once described a shocking experience from his 1999–2000 season while playing for the Seattle Supersonics. Furthermore, “Mad Max,” who is well-known for having a fiery temper, disclosed how he ended up striking down teammate Gary Payton at practice after an incident that infuriated him.

Gary looked back, got the ball, and just turned around and knocked the sh*t out of Shammond. He busted. him wide open..that pissed me off so bad. I was mad as hell…I just ran at him and hit him with a bunch of blows, pulled his jersey over his head, and slammed him down in front of the owner, the general manager, and Westphal. I was sitting on his chest, beating him some more until Chuck Person knocked me off him.

Furthermore, the battle went on from there. In the locker room, Vernon Maxwell and Payton got into another altercation. According to several stories, Maxwell hit Horace Grant with an inadvertent five-pound weight. This was while attempting to break up the altercation this time, shattering his shoulder and preventing him from playing for two weeks. One of the most dangerous and fierce altercations amongst NBA teammates was this one.
