Sami Zayn retains Intercontinental Championship (via WWE)
Sami Zayn recently defended his Intercontinental Championship against Chad Gable and Bronson Reed in a triple-threat match at King & Queen of the Ring. The former Olympian has been on the hunt for the title for the better part of a year. However, he has come up short multiple times. Therefore, Gable decided to get some help from Otis this time around.
Otis was standing by the ringside throughout the entire match. During the match, Gable asked his stablemate to get involved. The former Mr. Money in the Bank was willing to knock out Bronson Reed with a clothesline on the outside. However, he seemed reluctant when his coach asked him to do the same to Zayn.
The 330-pounder could not get himself to hit the Intercontinental Champion. This led to Chad Gable losing his temper. He insulted his tag team partner like before and even went so far as to push him and slap him. He then once again picked up the former NXT Champion and asked Otis to hit him.
Despite some hesitation, Otis charged toward Zayn. However, the champion ducked right on time, leading to the mentee accidentally hitting his coach and knocking him out. The Underdog from the Underground took advantage of the opportunity and rushed inside the ring to hit a Helluva Kick on Bronson Reed and pin him to retain his Intercontinental Championship.
Sami Zayn discusses his victory over Gunther at WrestleMania XL
In a recent interview with Arab News, Zayn talked about his historical win over Gunther, ending the Intercontinental Champion’s 666-day reign. He said that he had achieved something that many people thought was impossible.
Zayn felt honored to share the ring with Gunther, whom he called the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time. He claimed that one of the hardest things to do in WWE was to create a highly memorable match that stays with the fans for a long time. He was fortunate enough to be able to achieve that.
Sami Zayn asserted that the Ring General holding the title for so long added to the prestige of that match. He was proud of the crowd reaction that he got. The 39-year-old said that he was unable to articulate the indescribable thrill of performing on a stage as grand as WrestleMania XL.
