Overseas spectators to not be allowed for the Tokyo Olympics
Tokyo Olympics
The Tokyo Olympics have faced a plethora of mishaps that have not been in their control with the COVID-19 pandemic and a forced postponement being the most important among them. The costs have kept climbing with the postponement and it is already the most unique Games in history. However, the Games look set to happen finally and that is good news for the organizers albeit with strict restrictions.
Now, a decision has been taken on the allowing of overseas spectators in the Games. The same has been given a red light and there would be no spectators from abroad at the Games. The decision was made by the organizers along with the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee and the governments in Japan. The decision was expected to be taken already with news agencies reporting the same and it has now been confirmed.
Organizing committee will have to arrange refunds
Now that the organizing committee has decided to bar overseas spectators, they will now have the huge task of arranging refunds for those who had already bought tickets. Usually, 10 to 20 percent of ticket buyers would be overseas in a typical Olympic Games event. Further, the organizing committee had announced that 7.8 million tickets would be made available for the Games and now, the same would not be possible.
Meanwhile, the president of the committee, Thomas Bach has vouched for getting vaccines as soon as possible for the athletes. He had announced this month that China had offered to donate vaccines for athletes who wanted one before the Games.
The Games will begin on July 23 and go on till August 8.
