On Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers edged out the Florida Panthers 4-3 in overtime as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined once again. Following their heroics in Game 1, former NHL star and current analyst P.K. Subban made a bold suggestion of retiring their jerseys if they are able to win the Stanley Cup this year.

The Oilers, who have won the Cup 5 times in their history, have not tasted success since 1990. Last year, they made their return to the Stanley Cup final for the first time in 18 years but ended up suffering a heartbreaking loss against the Panthers.

In a rematch of last year’s finals, the Oilers landed the first punch as they won Game 1. Draisaitl opened the scoring withing 66 seconds of the game to give his team a 1-0 lead.

After falling 3-1 down, the Oilers mounted a comeback and forced overtime. With just mere seconds remaining in this period, the strike force of McDavid and Draisaitl came together. The Oilers captain set up Draisaitl to lift his team with a 4-3 win.

While speaking on this performance of the two Oilers stars on First Take, P.K. Subban wildly suggested that the team should send their numbers to the rafters if they finally win the Stanley Cup this year.

If Connor McDavid wins a Stanley Cup, Leon Draisaitl wins a Stanley Cup. I don’t know if this is going to happen, but I’d be an advocate for putting their jerseys up in the Rafters. Right away, these guys have been a bit good.

Subban also noted that these two stars will also be “immediate” Hall of Famers if the Cup returns to Edmonton after 35 years.

Draisaitl’s game-winning goal also gives the Canadian-based outfit its first lead in the Stanley Cup Final since their triumph in 1990. In their other two appearances since then, they had been chasing their opponents before suffering a loss in Game 7.

Draisaitl was the top scorer for the team in the regular season. The German International scored 52 goals and assisted 54 times to finish the year with a total of 106 points.

In the press conference after the game, the Oilers captain pointed out his teammate’s contributions towards the team and claimed that he was “invaluable.”

You can’t put a number on it. He’s invaluable. Does so many good things. Clutch, faceoffs, you name it, he does it. Doesn’t get enough respect or credit for his defensive abilities. When he’s dug in, there’s not many better, maybe nobody better.

Draisaitl’s overtime goal was also his 3rd goal in the extra period. This saw him tie the record for the most overtime goals in a single postseason with 3.
