The 2024 Masters tournament saw the first coming together of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf stars of the year. The first major championship saw several ups and downs and several swearing and usage of foul language from LIV Golf stars which has left Padraig Harrington unimpressed.
The three-time major champion would call out them for their behavior and questioned the antics of some of the big names of the breakaway tour. Though he did not drop any names, he seemed to have taken a swipe at Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.
The two members of Legion XIII have been seen cursing on the field after losing their tempers. The duo has been caught up in several hot mics. At the Masters, they were once spotted getting mad with themselves after hitting errant shots.
Though Harrington understands the frustrations, he was not happy with how LIV Golf bosses do not follow any rules or implement any sanctions to prevent this behavior. While speaking with Peter Finch at the Rough Cut Podcast, the Irishman claimed there was an “awful lot” of expletives from LIV golfers.
There was quite a bit of — on the Masters last week, there was an awful lot of extra expletives from LIV players… And clearly LIV players don’t get fined for expletives, and I’m not saying they’re encouraged, but they’re certainly not discouraged from doing it. I don’t mind the odd bit of cursing and a bit of that, but it was a little ... you know, you got to... there’s got to be some sort of restriction on it in some way.Padraig Harrington said
Golfers on the LIV Golf tour are not sanctioned for their usage of foul language. However, the PGA tour does not allow such kind of behavior and usually penalizes players for their poor conduct during tournaments.
Padraig Harrington previously suggested there should be rivalries between PGA Tour and LIV Golf
As the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) continues to be engaged in a “framework agreement” to merge the two bodies, Padraig Harrington came up with a wild idea. The Irish golfer suggested that there should be “rivalries” between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
The 52-year-old veteran would cite his own experience of playing on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour and claimed this rivalries will be good for the game and the fans.
Why not have it a little bit like the old European Tour-PGA Tour, where there’s a little bit of competition. Certainly it’s good for the fans when there’s rivalries.
Padraig Harrington said before the Cologuard Classic.
Whether Harrington’s idea will be taken or not remains to be seen. However, there have been glimpses of some bitterness still being in the hearts of golfers.
At the Masters tournament, took a swipe at LIV Golf after finding himself trailing round one leader Bryson DeChambeau. The 2023 U.S. Open winner would go on to claim that there are still 54 holes left to play, the same amount LIV plays, and expressed confidence in making a comeback. Unfortunately, things did not turn out the way he planned and he ended up missing the cut.
Meanwhile, Greg Norman has continued to praise his tour and attacked their critics. In an indirect dig at the PGA Tour, the two-time major champion boosted the success of LIV Golf Adelaide and claimed he was “sorry” for those who doubted them.
So the animosity between the two tours is still there. With the PGA Championship coming up next week, where Brooks Koepka, an LIV Golfer will defend the title, things could get heated.
