Since coming into the WNBA, Paige Bueckers has quietly proved why she was touted as the best generational prospect in the college recruiting class of 2020. The Dallas Wings guard is not one to talk, and lets her play market her true abilities.
That famed recruiting class also features Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, Cameron Brink, Hailey Van Lith, Te-Hina Paopao, Maddy Westbeld, Aaliyah Edwards, Kaitlyn Chen, and Sarah Ashlee Barker.
Except for Chen, Westbeld, and Paopao, the rest were first round picks and are expected to be cornerstones of their respective franchises. To be ranked as the best prospect among all of these top-tier recruits should give the unfamiliar fan an idea of how good Bueckers was.
Her consistently good play saw her become a first time All-Star starter. But her consistency does not tend to excite fans as much as Clark’s logo threes. However, she sometimes pull something out of her bag that tends to leave fans stunned.
Late in the 2nd quarter of the Wings’ game against the New York Liberty on Monday, Paige Bueckers was being guarded by the taller Stephanie Talbot. To gain separation, the rookie first drove forward and stopped to step back.
When the Australian returned to slow Bueckers, the Wings’ guard drove left, then dribbled behind the back and launched for a mid-range shot. Fans inside Barclays Center were stunned and let out oohs and aahs watching the rookie show out.
OH MY BUECKERS 👀

Even the commentators were shocked by the 23-year-old’s ability to leave a veteran player skating off not once, but twice on the same play. How she created separation was the hallmark of an elite player.
Fans fill social media with comments after Paige Bueckers’ ankle breakers
Basketball fans have started to grow accustomed to such elite dribbling skills. Usually, fans get to see these skills in the men’s game. But of late, the women’s game has started to bring out some sizzle.
They watched Paige Bueckers, who generally resorts to her elite awareness and agility to create separation, resort to such a move was both unexpected and exciting. Fans showered the rookie with praise on social media, examples of which are below:

Paige Bueckers ended up notching 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists in the 76-85 loss. This was their third straight loss, but they have a chance to reverse it when they face the Liberty again in a few days on their home court.
Paige Bueckers and Wings moving forward with young core
Over the past few days, the Dallas Wings were in the news after trading away star guard DiJonai Carrington. In return, they received Diamond Miller, Karlie Samuelson, and a second round draft pick.

This is after they traded away Carrington’s partner, NaLyssa Smith, for a first round pick earlier this season. They also brought in Chinese center Li Yueru earlier in the campaign. To facilitate the Carrington trade, they waived center Teaira McCowan.
This leaves the Wings with a youth-heavy squad where only 4 players aged 27 and above remain. Unsurprisingly, all four of them are on expiring contracts. That means there is a good chance that the Wings could look at their performances this season to decide on their future.
Either way, it is the young brigade led by Paige Bueckers that will become the base of their future. GM Curt Miller wanted to do something similar when he was the Los Angeles Sparks’ head coach. But they relieved him of his coaching duties after two miserable seasons.
Now, as the GM, he has entrusted the coaching to Chris Koclanes. His work is slowly coming to fruition, as was evident in this game, where the Wings fought closely with the defending champions, but could not finish the task.
