Not every No. 1 overall pick in any major sporting league turns out to become a superstar. The hardest part is to prove their worth in their rookie season. But it seems Paige Bueckers is taking that challenge to the heart.
In the WNBA, it is common for top draft picks to sit on the bench and learn until the team believes they are ready to play. Even if they were to start from the 1st game of the season, it takes a while for them to display their true worth.
Paige Bueckers is a generational talent who ended up in a perfect situation with the Dallas Wings. A rookie head coach, a roster put together with the future in mind, yet it consists of an All-Star and the reigning Most Improved Player of the Year.
Those two, namely Arike Agunbowale and DiJonai Carrington, along with a few other veterans, were expected to take the lead and help the four rookies on this team acclimatize. Instead, it has been Bueckers who has been their best player so far.
Her consistency made her an All-Star starter, and her performances so far have erased any doubts of anyone catching her in the Rookie of the Year stakes. That, too, because two other rookies were also All-Stars.
One play in their latest game highlights how her confidence is high enough to keep those other All-Star rookies at bay. Stephanie Talbot was guarding the UConn star. Bueckers, with the ball in her hands, started dribbling between the legs.

She then used her left shoulder to feign to the left. As soon as the Liberty forward bit on that move, Bueckers dribbled right to create space and jumped off to score an easy bucket.
Fans in awe of Paige Bueckers’ ball-handling skills
Clips of this sequence quickly went viral as not only was it the highlight of the game, but it was also an example of how good Paige Bueckers is. So far, WNBA fans have seen her show off her elite shooting efficiency, defense, and playmaking.
This series of dribble moves left fans stunned as they had not seen this from bigger guards in this league. Bueckers showing off such handles had fans believing she was the woman avatar of Kyrie Irving.
Fans also believe that with such skills, other players might find it difficult to outperform her. They believe they are witnessing a player who is destined to become one of the greatest in the game. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Paige Bueckers was the No. 1 ranked prospect in the famed recruiting class of 2020. She also stayed true to her potential when she won the AP Player of the Year as a freshman. All of this when Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, Hailey Van Lith, and Cameron Brink were vying for that award too.
Paige Bueckers and Wings starting to find their stride
In the initial couple of months of her rookie season, Paige Bueckers knew her Dallas Wings were going through a tough rebuilding phase. Players had to get accustomed to each other, and injuries added to their misery.

They were the worst team in the league, and their overall play was fitting for that moniker. Fast-forward to now, and the team that started the season 1-9 now finds itself sitting 3rd from bottom with an 8-19 record.
They have lost 10 games, but won 7 too, a mark of progress for a team that is just getting back all its players healthy. Their latest 92-82 win over Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty is a testament that the team can take the battle to the big teams.
All the Wings need is some consistency from its other young players, namely Li Yueru, Luisa Geiselsoder, JJ Quinerly, and Aziaha James. Once that happens, the Wings will be in a position to challenge for a postseason run.
