The Asia Cup came to a fitting end with an absolute thrilling final to crown India, the Asian Champions of 2025. It was a dream final for many because it was the first time in Asia Cup history that India and Pakistan were going head on against each other in the final.

The cherry on the cake for Indian cricket fans was to see their side barely prevail in a last over thriller. With the win, India extended their dominant record over Pakistan by making it 3-0 for the current Asia Cup and 8-0 in the previous 8 matches between the two sides.

However, the thrilling final was followed by an awkward moment as the game approached the trophy ceremony. Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi was seen standing at the podium to present the winner’s trophy, but the Indian team looked least interested in collecting the trophy from him.

In fact, the Indian players awkwardly were seen lying down on the field and looking into their phones almost making it a mass ignorance to the ACC chairman. This gesture from the Indian side was done because Naqvi was also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

India, in this Asia Cup have decided that they will boycott any physical interaction with any Pakistani national and thus they didn’t show any interest and also denied collecting the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. There were rumors floating around that maybe the Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel would go and collect the trophy on behalf of the Indian team.

This was because Morkel is a South African national but soon those rumors were put to bed as India strongly denied collecting the trophy. Naqvi also stood his ground stating that being chairman of the ACC he would want to present the trophy to the winning team.

When it was clear that no individual from the Indian team would go to collect the silverware, Naqvi stormed back into the stands with the trophy. It is unclear as of now how India will collect the trophy, however an update about the same is expected soon.

BCCI Secretary uses Strong Words as He Gives His Verdict on Trophy Ceremony

The act of the Indian team followed by Mohsin Naqvi storming with the trophy drew different responses from both countries. However, the major response that came in first was from BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who didn’t agree with Naqvi’s storming back to the stands act.

Devajit Saikia expresses disappointment at the Asia Cup trophy being sent back.

We have decided not to take the Asia Cup trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan. So we decided not to take it from him but that does not mean that the gentleman will take away the trophy with him, along with the medals so it is very unfortunate and we hope that the trophy and the medals will be returned to India as soon as possible. There is an ICC conference in November in Dubai. In the next conference, we are going to launch a very serious and very strong protest against the act of the ACC chairperson.

Saikia felt that Naqvi should have handed over the trophy to a different representative and then the Indian would have collected it. He was not pleased to see Naqvi going back with the trophy and has warned that the matter would be raised in the upcoming ICC meeting.

This Asia Cup was all about what has happened between India and Pakistan off the field way more than about what has happened on the field. Both teams from time to time have shown antics that have never been seen before in world cricket let alone an India vs Pakistan game.

Interestingly the Indian women will play the Pakistani women coming Sunday in Colombo as a part of the women’s ICC ODI World Cup. The eyes will keenly now be on that match not only for the cricket but the behaviors and gestures around it.

There are a lot more matches scheduled between the two teams in the upcoming years and with the unfortunate events in this Asia Cup, it will be interesting to see how both sides treat each other going forward.
