Emma Raducanu has kick-started her Canadian Open campaign in an emphatic fashion. Following her run to the semifinal of the Citi Open in Washington, Raducanu wasted no time in heading to Montreal, where, in her first round, she breezed past Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

In the following round, she knocked out home favorite Peyton Stearns in straight sets to reach the third round. She has advanced to round three of the Montreal WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.

Raducanu has also made her second appearance in the tournament following the 2022 season. In 2022, she reached her career-best ranking of No.10 thanks to her fairytale run at the US Open the previous season.

The Brit defeated Leylah Fernandez to win her career’s first Grand Slam title. Since that win, however, Raducanu has never progressed beyond the fourth round of a Major tournament, and because of this, she has faced a lot of criticism. Former doubles World No.1 Pam Shriver, however, thinks Raducanu has the ability to win another Major. She told Talking Tennis:

Obviously, in the last say three and a half years, four years, she’s kind of fallen back into kind of like a solid player with some good results during the year.

This season, her campaign in the first three Grand Slam tournaments ended without her reaching the last 16. At the Australian Open, six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek knocked her out in the third round, while at the French Open, the Pole once again ended her run, this time in the second round. At Wimbledon, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka beat her in the third round.

But if you just took her resume, take that US Open out, that one tournament out, you would probably say no, she’s not going to win one. She might have some quarterfinals, semifinals, but when you know that somebody’s had the mindset to do it once, you always think, sure, they can do it again.

Pam Shriver added

Raducanu is also chasing her first title since winning that US Open. At the Citi Open before the Montreal event, Raducanu’s run was ended by eventual runner-up Anna Kalinskaya in the semifinals.

Emma Raducanu to lock horns with Amanda Anisimova in the Canadian Open third round

Emma Raducanu for sure is playing better than in the previous two years. Even if she has not yet reached a final since that US Open run, this year, Raducanu has made deep runs in several tournaments.

In the third round of the Montreal event, Raducanu is pitted against none other than her good friend Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu is happy to play the Canadian Open, given that it’s here she was born (in Toronto in 2002).

I just want to say thank you. I mean, I see the Union Jack, so thank you. I saw that in some clutch moments, and I was actually born in Canada, so, to come back and (smiles)…so, yeah, for me it means so much to be able to do well here, and I’m very happy to be in the next round.

Emma Raducanu said in her on-court interview after her second-round win

Raducanu has faced Anisimova twice, winning both matches. They played both times this year- in the second round of the Australian Open and the fourth round of the Miami Open.

Unlike Raducanu, Anisimova has played three finals, winning the Qatar Open. At the Queen’s Club Championships, Tatjana Maria denied the American ace her first title on grass. Next, at Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek scripted history by beating the 23-year-old with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline in the championship match.
