The Carolina Panthers have finally listened to the fans and benched the second-year quarterback Bryce Young ahead of the week 3 match against the Las Vegas Raiders. As much as head coach Dave Canales wanted to give the quarterback a chance, he had to look into the team’s best interests, which unfortunately wasn’t him as the team suffered the disastrous 3-26 loss in week 2.

After the struggle of last season, when there appeared to be no improvement in the team this season, the team ultimately decided to bench Young and give backup quarterback Andy Dalton an opportunity in week 3. While announcing the news, head coach Canales was also about the involvement of owner David Tepper in the decision to bench Young but he refused to comment on anything.

Canales has never been secretive about his bonding with the Panther owner but this time, he refused to bring Tepper’s name into the decision while affirming that he took the decision.

I wanna keep that private. What I would like to say though is this is something after I watched the film. I looked at it, had a thought, starting working on talking to the guys that we make decisions with. Certainly, a lot of parties involved there.

Canales clarified that the prime responsibility burdened upon his shoulder at the moment is to help the team succeed in a victory. Since Young hasn’t been able to fulfill the job, it was time to move on and give the team the best chance with Dalton in week 3.

Dave Canales’ debut marred by Bryce Young’s poor performance

The Panthers poached head coach Canales from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after seeing how he revived the career of Baker Mayfield. He sure did succeed as the quarterback earned his first Pro Bowl selection after posting a season at 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2023.

Carolina had the same expectations from him, given Young’s situation wasn’t quite different from Mayfield’s. However, the season began and the Panthers suffered two blowout back-to-back losses with signal-caller Young finishing with 245 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The speculative reason why Tepper’s name has come up in the headlines is that, after week 2’s humiliating loss, Carolina’s head coach had asserted faith in Young by calling him the team’s quarterback, that too within the last 24 hours.
