Rico Dowdle had a score to settle with the Dallas Cowboys. Throughout the week leading up to the week 6 matchup in Carolina, Dowdle had explicitly warned his former team to “buckle up.”
The Panthers snagged a win against the Miami Dolphins a week earlier with Dowdle spearheading the attack. He recorded his first-ever 200-yard rushing game on 23 carries, becoming the first undrafted running back to do so since the NFL merger.
The unprecedented achievement allowed Dowdle to send a warning to the Cowboys, where he had spent the first five years of his NFL career. He did not disappoint.
Despite giving up 27 points on defense, Dowdle saved the Panthers’ offense by racking up 230+ scrimmage yards from 34 touches on the ball and scored one receiving touchdown to record a famous win over the NFC East franchise.
After the game, reporters asked the 27-year-old if he had any message for the Cowboys.
They weren’t buckled up.

Even though he had a bone to pick with Dallas for cutting him, the game was more about winning for the Panthers rather than defeating the Cowboys.
I talked to a couple of guys out there. They know I meant no harm, but that’s me. I just always talk, joke around with them, and things like that.

Dowdle improved his tally to 81 carries for 472 rushing yards and 3 total touchdowns.
Rico Dowdle received praise from his teammates
After completing his college career with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Dowdle signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cowboys in 2020. He made a total of 52 appearances and rushed over 1500 yards.

His best numbers came during the 2024 season when he rushed 235 times for 1079 yards and scored 5 total touchdowns. However, the Cowboys chose to part ways with him in the offseason, which led him back close to his home in Carolina.
With Chuba Hubbard being the lead back of the team, Dowdle had limited touches of the ball in the first four games. After Hubbard suffered a calf injury in the Panthers’ week four loss to the New England Patriots, head coach Dave Canales elevated Dowdle to the RB1 position.
Dowdle answered the call with two consecutive 200-yard scrimmage games.
Just looked like the same guy last week, ran with violence, had a plan, a man on a mission that wants to make yards and really just take our schemes and make them come alive.

Quarterback Bryce Young played a big part on Sunday. The third-year starter threw 17 completions from 25 attempts for 199 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
It’s so much fun being able to turn around and watch to see all the great stuff that our backs do. So, we’re glad he’s with us.

For the Panthers’ sake, Dowdle needs many more nights like these. There are still 11 games left in the season, with the 0-6 New York Jets being their next opponents.
On that note, the Panthers are 3-3 for only the fifth time in franchise history. They missed the playoffs on three occasions and lost the divisional final once (in 2013).
