Papu Gomez set to complete Sevilla move from Atalanta
Atalanta playmaker, Alejandro Papu Gomez is all set to complete his move to Sevilla. This will be Sevilla’s first signing in the January transfer window.
The 32-year-old will sign a contract of three and a half seasons running till 2024. A lot of clubs were interested I signing the forward but Sevilla was Papu’s preferred destination.
Papu Gomez had a difference of opinion with his previous manager
The Argentine had a huge fall out with his Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini. He was sidelined for the last few months and missed out on first team appearances.
Gomez has not played since mid-December after an argument during a Champions League group stage match with Midtjylland. He trained separately to the rest of the squad since then.
Gomez joined the side in 2014 from Ukrainian outfit Metalist Kharkiv, and skippered them to the Champions League quarter-finals on their competition debut.
He has scored 59 goals in 252 games for Atalanta. The club have however fared well without him and are currently 6th in the Serie A.
Alejandro Gomez spoke to reporters before leaving for Spain acknowledging the move.
“I loved my time at Atalanta but I am excited to start this new chapter.”
Sevilla wanted to sign the player earlier during Jorge Sampaoli’s reign but instead signed Franco Vazquez. According to reports, the fee would be an initial €6m plus €1m in add-ons.
The news comes after striker Carlos Fernandez joined Real Sociedad last week with Sevilla then prioritising adding a playmaker to their squad this month.
