Donna Vekic, the World No. 21 from Croatia, will play her first Olympics semifinal on Thursday (August 1). After knocking out Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals, Vekic will meet Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
But before her three-set win over the Ukrainian, Vekic denied America’s Coco Gauff a chance to extend her campaign in singles. The Croat, in a match full of controversy, beat the 2023 US Open champion in straight sets.
En route to the semifinals, Schmiedlova, who is playing in her second Olympics, also advanced to her first semifinal in the quadrennial event. She eliminated two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova in the previous round in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. The 29-year-old also faced 2024 Wimbledon and French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini in the third round and British No. 1 Katie Boulter in the first round.
