Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Preview
Any meeting between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz is epic. The young Spaniard is one of the few players who can challenge the Serbian, with their six previous matches, resulting in an even split of wins.
Djokovic has had a tough couple of matches. He started the Games campaign well with a win over Matthew Ebden and Rafael Nadal but struggled in the next rounds with his leg and tennis a bit. Furthermore, the knee issue did not stop him from beating Dominik Koepfer, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Musetti in his next matches to secure his place in the final.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, had a relatively easy outing at the Games. Without struggling much, the Spaniard got through five rounds. He did face a challenge against Tommy Paul in the second set but managed to beat him as well to make it to the final.
Alcaraz and Djokovic’s latest encounter was at the 2024 Wimbledon final, Djokovic’s first final of the year despite not being at 100%. In the end, Djokovic couldn’t match the in-form Alcaraz, who won in straight sets.
Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Prediction
Heading into the match, Carlos Alcaraz is arguably in better form, both physically and tennis-wise. The youngster is fresh off a Channel Slam (French Open + Wimbledon) and looks to add an Olympic gold to that list as well, equaling Rafa Nadal’s feat in 2008.
However, one major positive for Djokovic is his knee. Despite the pain and struggle for movement, Nole made it to two tournament finals. He showed signs of extreme pain during the quarterfinal match but gave good news after his semi-final win.
With a win over Musetti, Djokovic lay on the ground and even shed a few tears, proving just how much winning at the Olympics means to him. This fire inside him may be the turning factor of the game, which might help him fend off Alcaraz.
Match Prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in three sets.
