Paris Olympics BANS ‘Jesus Christ’ surf-board of Brazilian Joao Chianca

Brazilian surfer Joao Chianca shares that he was forced to change his surfboard featuring an image of Jesus Christ before entering the Paris Games. The incident apparently took place two days before the Olympic Opening Ceremony where religious controversy shook the internet regarding the “Last Supper”.

Chianca reportedly put a post about this incident on his Instagram account but later deleted it. It was said that since the Olympics focuses on “neutrality”, a surfboard featuring Christ will be deemed as a religious symbol.

The athlete claimed that unless he removed the image or used another alternative, he would be disqualified from the competition. According to Joao Chianca, he is not authorized to place a religious figure on his board as “the game have strict rules and focus on total neutrality.”

Social media reacts to Joao Chianca’s surfboard incident

Social media strongly reacted to Brazilian surfer Joao Chianca’s incident since witnessing the Opening Ceremony’s version of “Last Supper”. Fans were outraged to see a group of drag queens perform the iconic “Last Supper” scene from the Bible.

Many stated that Chianca should have stood his ground and refused such orders. At the same time, many asked how this incident was deemed to be questionable in neutrality given what took place on the Opening Night. Some of the reactions on social media are:

The 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony was marred by many other mistakes, including the Olympic flag getting hoisted upside down, the South Korean squad introduced as North Korea, and even a performer’s wardrobe malfunction.

Regardless, the competitions are on a high note, with fans excited to see which country has the most medals. The Olympic Games will end on 11 August.
