The Olympics is expected to be the biggest and grandest stage in all of sports. The pinnacle of sports – a platform where only the best of the best compete. Unfortunately, at the Paris Olympics, the best athletes in the world are not getting the best treatment that they deserve. The latest complaint is with respect to the quality of the medal being issued to the winners.
Nyjah Huston, an American skateboarder who won the bronze medal in the men’s street skateboarding final on the 29th of July at the Paris Olympics took to Instagram to highlight the condition of his medal. The medals look shiny and of top-tier quality as they are garlanded around the podium finisher’s necks and hundreds of pictures are snapped of the athletes showcasing their medals when they win. Seldom is the condition of the medal known after some time passes.
Nyjah Huston’s bronze medal seems to have deteriorated quicker than expected.
Alright, so these Olympic medals look great when they are brand new. But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and then letting my friends wear it over the weekend, they are apparently not as high quality as you would think.Nyjah Huston said on Instagram

Huston’s medal is beginning to break down, the luster is gone and it is chipping off. He expressed his disappointment over the quality of the medals.
The Olympic Medals are made to be stored in glass displays rather than be worn
The skater joked that his medal appears to have gone to war. He wrote in a separate post that these medals are probably better suited to be stored in cases rather than worn around the neck for longer durations.

Nyjah Huston cherished his win in the Olympics by wearing the medal for a while after he had gotten off the podium. He further gave his family and friends an opportunity to wear the medal and handle it. The bronze nature of the medal could have resulted in it reacting to the sweat and moisture before ultimately leading to deterioration of the quality of the metal.
Paris 2024 is working closely with the Mannaie de Paris, the institution tasked with the production and quality controls of the medals, and together with the National Olympic Committee of the athlete concerned, in order to appraise the medal to understand the circumstances and cause of the damage. The medals are the most coveted objects of the Games and the most precious for the athletes. Damaged medals will be systematically replaced by the Monnaie de Paris and engraved in an identical way to the originals.
The Paris Olympics spokesperson responded to PEOPLE Magazine’s query seeking a response to Nyjah Huston’s claim
This would mean that Huston will get a brand new bronze medal in place of his existing one. It is not a good look for the organizing committee to receive complaints this quickly about medals. The athletes put a lot of time and effort into preparing for their respective sports. They deserve to be awarded medals of the highest quality.
