Ex-Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel, who is a part of Gujarat Titans’ coaching team, busted a fake quote on Mumbai Indians star Rohit Sharma, that was attributed to him. The 40-year-old lashed out at the fake social media accounts that have engaged in misinformation during the ongoing IPL season.

The problem of misinformation and fake content has been growing rapidly, with the IPL being the latest victim. Several cricketers, analysts and commentators have, from time to time, been forced to come out and clear the air regarding the fake news attributed to them. Gujarat Titans’ batting coach Parthiv Patel embroiled into controversy most recently, owing to a similar incident of fake news.

It happened after Gujarat Titans’ recent 36-run victory over five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It marked GT’s first win of the new season, while for MI, it was their second straight defeat this new season. Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler contributed with the bat for the home side, as GT posted a total of 196 runs on the board.

MI could only score 160 runs for the loss of six wickets, with Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj shining with the ball. After the match, an X user posted a picture of former MI skipper Rohit Sharma and GT coach Parthiv Patel. It went on to surprisingly claim that the 40-year-old former wicket-keeper had made a controversial comment on the Indian skipper, in an interview with Harsha Bhogle on the sidelines.

The viral graphic shared that Patel had stated that Mumbai Indians are missing their old captain, after two back-to-back IPL defeats. It was supposedly aimed at MI’s captaincy switch last season, from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya, a decision that faced considerable backlash. Patel was reportedly answering Harsha Bhogle’s question about Mumbai Indians missing out on the services of Jasprit Bumrah.

However, the GT coach immediately took to social media to debunk the truth, as he bluntly responded to the quote attributed to him. Labeling it as ‘fake’, Parthiv Patel went on to humorously state that he has got some good collabs and social media content that could be shared, over spreading misinformation about him. Nonetheless, the 40-year-old was actually questioned about the pitch behavior, after their victory.

Moreover, a similar incident happened a few days ago, involving Chennai Super Kings’ talisman MS Dhoni and commentator Aakash Chopra. Chopra slammed a fan for distorting his statements, while misleadingly attacking it to visuals of Dhoni walking out to bat against RCB.

Ex-Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar takes a dig at Rohit Sharma, says ‘things are slipping’ away from him

Former Indian batter-turned cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar slammed Rohit Sharma over his recent form, claiming that ‘things are slipping’ away. His comments came after the 37-year-old managed to score just eight runs for Mumbai Indians in his first two IPL matches this season.

Rohit Sharma has endured a woeful start to the 2025 season, after being dismissed on single digit scores in back-to-back matches. Speaking about the 37-year-old’s recent form, Sanjay Manjrekar claimed that Sharma is going through a tough phase. He added that the Indian captain is not the same player he was a few years ago, and urged him to keep pushing to regain his form, rather than relying on his natural talent.

Rohit Sharma is clearly going through a phase. He’s not the Rohit Sharma of, say, three to four years ago. He’s at a stage in his career where he has to push himself, because things are slipping away for him.

The veteran Indian star, however, does come off a brilliant white-ball season with the Indian team, winning two successive ICC trophies. He was the Player of the Match in the final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, against New Zealand.
