Each year, the rosters of NFL football teams change but one thing that continues to remain constant is the referees’ performance while making calls. The officiating crew has taken a lot of heat in the past for making some questionable calls. Tonight was no different in the New York Jets’ matchup against the New England Patriots.

The referees called a pass interference on a single-handed catch attempt by Davante Adams after defensive back Christian Gonzalez barely touched the wide receiver. Aaron Rodgers threw a pass to Adams who attempted to make a one-hand catch but the ball slid through his hands and the wideout was able to just touch it with his fingertips.

Christian Gonzalez was behind Davante Adams and did not touch the wideout. He did not prevent him from catching the ball in any manner and there was absolutely no illegal contact on the play. Despite the replay showing that it was a clear play, the referees threw a flag on the play and dubbed it pass interference.

Fans react to pass interference call involving Christian Gonzalez and Davante Adams

This call was crucial for one reason. Had the play been ruled as not complete then the possession of the ball would have gone to the New England Patriots as the Jets’ drive would have ended. However, owing to the flag, the Jets were able to retain possession of the ball and keep their drive alive.

It is unbelievable that the referees failed to see that Christian Gonzalez did not indulge in pass interference on this play. Fans expressed their frustration with the league’s officiating via X. Here are some of the reactions:

The New York Jets wound up scoring on the next play. This means the pass interference call cost the New England Patriots 7 points and the lead. At the end of the third quarter, the Jets have a 2-point lead. This is not a new occurrence with the officiating crew making questionable calls weekly. The unfortunate thing is that the NFL will not hold them accountable and the cycle will continue.
