Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash has no doubt about Nick Kyrgios‘ ability but is unsure whether the Aussie would be able to play to his full potential after making his comeback. Kyrgios hasn’t played a match since the 2023 Stuttgart Open but has announced that he will play at the Brisbane International next year before the Australian Open.
In Melbourne, the 29-year-old has planned to play doubles with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. The pair won a Major back in the 2022 Australian Open with a win over Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.
Kyrgios suffered from wrist, foot, and knee injuries and had surgeries. While on the sidelines, he started to do commentary for BBC and ESPN and even thought of retiring. But as he is set to return, Cash is doubtful about him playing in the Grand Slam events.
He’s been out for two years and that’s a long time. He needs to be super-fit to get through matches back-to-back. Over three sets, he will probably be okay to do it, but can he do it over five sets in a Grand Slam? He’s always had the ability, but issues with his mind and his body have held him back.
Pat Cash told Tennis365
Kyrgios’ best season of his career was in 2022 when he reached his first Grand Slam singles final. He met Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon but lost the match in four sets.
Nick Kyrgios doesn’t like to play Wimbledon
Nick Kyrgios discussed with Sam Querrey which Grand Slam tournament they don’t like. For Querrey, the worst Grand Slam event is the Australian Open but Kyrgios argued that Wimbledon ‘is not even that good’ because he doesn’t like the ‘set-up and the cafe’.

US Open is my favorite. I love the venue, the food court is insane, I love that. Wimbledon is insane, I just don’t like the – I don’t know – I just prefer the US Open. It’s so simple, locker room, go upstairs, food. Wimbledon, just not a fan of it man.
Nick Kyrgios said on the Nothing Major podcast
Kyrgios is a controversial figure in the tennis world and is being called a ‘Bad Boy’ of tennis due to his unsportsmanlike conduct. He had invited criticism at the 2022 Wimbledon as well. He didn’t pay heed to Wimbledon’s all-white dress code by wearing a red cap and red Air Jordans (but not during the match) and was fined for verbal obscenities during his clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
