In a major development on Thursday, former Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa apologized for his ‘past mistakes’. The 7-time MLB All-Star shared an open apology and expressed his desire to return back to the team. Cubs radio host Pat Hughes would later reflect on Sosa’s time with the team and call him a “showman“.

The Dominican international became a fan favorite at Wrigley Field during his time at the Cubs. However, he was later alleged to be using Performance-Enhancing Drugs (PEDs). Since this story came out, his relationship with the team took a massive turn.

For the past two decades, Sosa had been exiled from the club. On Thursday, the 56-year-old sent a heartfelt message to the organization and hoped to see move forward. A few hours later, team owner Tom Ricketts extended an invitation for him to attend the team’s convention in 2025, reconciling with him in the process.

Hughes, who has been part of the Cubs for a long time, reflected on Sosa’s tenure with the Cubs and called him a tremendous athlete.

He was a showman. He was a tremendous athlete. Not just a home run hitter, he could run, steal bases, hit for average. He was a great RBI man.

The sportscaster also commented on Sosa’s historic home run with Mark McGwire in 1998 and claimed it was an absolute thrill to be part of it.

During that year, the two players started strong. Months later, the two of them found themselves trying to break Roger Maris‘ record of 61 home runs in a regular season. This led to an intensified race between them which saw a huge increase in baseball viewership.

McGwire reached the 50-home run mark first and won the race eventually. He ended the season with 70 home runs while Sosa finished four behind with 66. Years later, McGwire admitted to taking PEDs. On the other hand, Sosa kept on denying the usage of steroids.

MLB insider rejects Sammy Sosa’s apology

The MLB world received a major shock on Thursday when Sammy Sosa apologized for his ‘past mistakes’. While he did not directly admit to using PEDs, he acknowledged that he did whatever it took to recover from his injuries. One MLB insider has now rejected his apology.

Reacting to Sosa’s apology on X, insider Jared Carrabis said he does not accept his apology. However, there is a major catch in this. Carrabis did not accept his apology as he did not want one. In the post on X, he instead thanked the Dominican star for the show he put up with Mark McGwire in 1998.

I don’t accept Sammy Sosa’s apology for taking steroids because I don’t need an apology. Thank you for putting on the show of a lifetime in 1998 and saving baseball.

In his 18-year career in the MLB, Sosa played for four more teams apart from the Chicago Cubs. He is one of the nine players in MLB history to hit 600 or more home runs, finishing his career with 609.

His history with the PEDs has seen him not make the MLB Hall of Fame. In his last year of eligibility, Sosa achieved just 18 percent of votes, way less than the 75 percent required to reach Cooperstown. Despite this apology, Sosa will be one of the top names who will never see their name in the Hall of Fame.
