Pat McAfee baffled by Anthony Richardson leaving the battlefield because he was “out of breath”

Anthony Richardson was taken out of the game in what was suspected to be an injury but the actual reason was far more baffling.

Anthony Richardson is just 22 years old but he might have the cardiovascular endurance of a 40-year-old. The quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts has been susceptible to injuries in his two seasons in the NFL and Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans came with its share of scares to Richardson’s health.

In the second half of the game, Anthony Richardson and the Colts were in a position to score as they trailed by 10. The quarterback was sacked at the line of scrimmage on a second-and-goal play after which he lay down on the field for a few seconds before getting back up. He then proceeded to sub himself out which led fans to believe that the quarterback was hurt yet again.

However, that was far from the case. Anthony Richardson left the game because he was ‘out of breath’ as revealed by the broadcast team. An NFL player who checked out because he was gassed out. This of course did not sit well with fans and NFL veterans. Pat McAfee, a legend in Indianapolis was one of the first to call out the quarterback over this move.

I had never seen an NFL QB tap out while still being healthy until watching Anthony Richardson…The QB is your franchise. The message it sends is loud and influential.

The former kicker was shocked at the young quarterback losing his breath in Week 8 of the season.

Anthony Richardson managed to return shortly after and led the Colts to the endzone

It is strange to believe that this was indeed the case because the words NFL quarterback and out of breath usually do not belong in the same sentence. Fortunately for Richardson, he returned to the field shortly after to lead the Colts to a touchdown drive. So maybe all is not bad after all?

While that might be what fans would like to believe, Richardson’s numbers are concerning. The quarterback has the lowest completion percentage for an NFL QB in a half with 13.3% in the last 30 years. Not a record you want to have your name associated with.

He ended the game with 10 completions on 32 attempts, that is a lot of throws to virtually nobody on the field. He had an interception in the loss to the Texans tonight and it was a turnover that was caused by an unnecessary risk that he took with under 23 seconds to go before halftime.

Anthony Richardson was dubbed to be a quarterback similar to Lamar Jackson because of his ability to throw the ball and run it. However, he has yet to prove that he can play well and do so consistently. His durability has been an issue with him missing two games this season due to an oblique injury.

Tonight’s decision to sub out of the game after losing his breath is strange for a quarterback. It is normal to see defensive linemen and wideouts do so on a few occasions but that is because their position is physically more demanding than the quarterback.
