The NFL has spent millions in advertising and increasing the reach of the game. However, none of the ad campaigns of the league has likely achieved the same level of success as Taylor Swift‘s regular appearances and newly found admiration for the game. Since being spotted at a Chiefs game for the first time last season to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce, the pop star has become a regular sight at the team’s games.
Her presence has increased the popularity of the game amongst young girls and has brought in more female viewership, something that the NFL has been attempting to do for the longest. Former NFL kicker and media personality Pat McAfee recently joined Travis and Jason Kelce on the New Heights podcast wherein he gave props to the Chiefs tight end for his relationship.
The host of College Gameday was enthusiastic about the impact Kelce and Swift have had on football. He went on to credit Kelce as being the right person to be the global face of football because of how he has conducted himself and continues to excel at the sport.
Taylor Swift has helped the NFL improve its gender inclusivity in terms of viewership
The numbers speak for themselves. As per Sportico, the official social media handles of the NFL posted Swift 34 times and gained a reach of 170 million views. Travis Kelce‘s jersey sales surged by 400% and the Chiefs gained 200,000 followers. The biggest development comes in terms of viewership numbers.
Female NFL fans increased by over 4 million with a 53% increase in interest amongst teen girls, a 24% increase among women aged 18-24, and a 34% rise in viewership numbers among women aged 35+. The impact that she has had on the sport is beyond incredible. Soon enough, the Sundays when Kansas City is scheduled to play might be called ‘Swift Sundays’ because the odds of the 14-time Grammy awardee being present there are high.
The results of a recent survey conducted by The Athletic concur with McAfee’s statements. Out of 102 players who participated in the poll, an overwhelming majority agreed that Swift attending NFL games and the media coverage are great for football.
Ultimately, the NFL is a business. The league is always looking to increase its viewership by broadening the age groups that can watch football and eradicating the game’s restriction to a particular gender. Taylor Swift has played a key part in helping that happen and she continues to do so.
