Pat Riley did not expect his Miami Heat to struggle the way they did after he traded away Jimmy Butler. Since that trade, they lost 18 games while winning just 12, enough to remain in the play-in spots. They did win both their play-in games to cement another season of playoff basketball.

But finishing 8th means one goes up against the No. 1 seed in that conference. In their case, they were up against a Cleveland Cavaliers team who were one of the best teams in the league for most of the regular season.

But the Heat Culture that Pat Riley has built should be enough to push the teams to perform admirably. They lost the first two games on the road by an average margin of 15 points. That should give Heat fans some hope that when they return home, they should steal a win at least.

Back home at Kaseya Center, the Cavaliers humiliated the Heat first by 37 points in game three, and then blew them out by 55 points in game 4. After that performance, fans believed the team needed a breath of fresh air and were not sure if Riley agreed. But Riley had an answer for his critics at the season’s exit interview.

I think we do have to make changes. There’s no doubt there has to be some change. Run it back, we are not going to do that. We are going to try and stay away from that.

Pat Riley said

With this statement, the NBA’s Godfather acknowledged that there have to be changes for the Miami Heat to be successful again. But contrary to what fans believe, he reiterated that he is going to make whatever changes are necessary.

Pat Riley reiterates he is not ready to retire

Even though he might be looking to overhaul the Miami Heat roster, there are still many who believe his age is catching up with him. His decision not to hand Jimmy Butler an extension and eventually trade him did not sit well with them. But Riley reiterated, as quoted by the Miami Herald, that age was just a number for him.

The new 80 is the new 60. I’m competitive as hell. I love being in the bowl. I got a little depressed after the last two games. Micky Arison and Nick Arison and I met and they’ve been very good to me, and they said carry on, Pat. I’m going to carry on and try to make this thing better.

Pat Riley said

By garnering the backing of owners, Pat Riley clarified that he is the Heat’s decision-maker. He will do what is best for the team, and if that means that he has to let go of their best player, so be it. Now he will look towards building an era without Butler in it.

Riley will have to retool the roster to make the Miami Heat competitive again

The 80-year-old will have a task on his hands trying to find players who can uplift the franchise. Superstars might not be interested in going to South Beach after the way Pat Riley handled Jimmy Butler‘s departure.

Some former players have labeled Riley as being responsible for driving Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, and now Butler out. Current generation stars are not very keen on taking on the rigors of The Godfather’s methods, and would prefer somewhere where they can hoop in peace.

This is a generational difference rather than viewing it as a lack of commitment. How Riley manages to work around it is going to define how the Heat compete next season onwards. But he will have to take the help of other teams to make something happen.

The Heat do not have much maneuverability this season, but can dangle some of the expiring contracts they have. Riley has to find partners who can take those contracts in exchange for players who can compete alongside Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo.
