Mario Chalmers, the former point guard for the Miami Heat, hinted at the extent of team President Pat Riley’s influence in his city during an interview on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back.” Since assuming control of the Heat in 1995, Pat Riley has served as its “Godfather” and boasts a lot of influence in the city.

Thinking back on one of his best-ever interactions with Riley, Chalmers remembers Riley telling him what he did following a night in town. Chalmers claimed Riley knew everything that used to happen in and around the Miami Heat

It was my rookie year and I had went out. I was out having fun, nothing major. And Pat said, 'You went out last night.' And he's like, 'You are at this bar, you had this many drinks, and then you went home.' I was like, 'How do you know everything?'
Mario Chalmers said on FanDuel TV’s “Run it Back

In today’s present world, it is understandable that Pat Riley has grown his influence and connections over the years that he has been at the Heat.

And he said, 'I run Miami. You can't do anything in Miami without me knowing you know.' I wasn't in trouble, he was just letting me know like, you can't do anything in this city without me knowing.

As a result of his relationships, authority, and effective choice-making as a team executive, the Heat have created a winning culture that has sustained their relevance for many years.

Shaquille O’Neal was convinced that Pat Riley had spies behind him too

Back in his time, Shaquille O’Neal was one of the best NBA players to grace the league. He won back-to-back titles with the Los Angeles Lakers before ending up with the Miami Heat in 2004.

However, the Heat were coached by legendary coach and president Pat Riley. Notably, it was not an easy task dealing with Riley, according to O’Neal.

In his book, “Shaq Uncut,” Riley, according to O’Neal, was a dictator who made him tone down so he could play on his team. O’Neal further claimed in his book that he was convinced that Riley had spied behind him and several other Miami Heat stars back then.

O’Neal asserted in the book that Riley was always aware of his whereabouts the previous evening. The following day, O’Neal would be questioned by the former Heat coach, who would know precisely when and where he visited.
