- Gabe Vincent was surprised by Pat Riley flying out to meet him during free agency.
- Vincent struggled during his time with the Lakers, making only 11 appearances in his first season.
- He noted that media pressure while playing for the Lakers is significantly higher than with other teams.
It has been a while since the NBA world heard the name Gabe Vincent. The 29-year-old was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Luke Kennard at the trade deadline this year after a difficult time with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the undrafted player made a name for himself during his time with the Miami Heat.
In a recent appearance on a podcast, Vincent recalled a memorable moment involving Miami Heat president Pat Riley during his free agency.
Pat flying out to meet with me and I’m like ‘flying out to meet with me? I’m not Magic, I’m not Kobe or Shaq, or D Wade. What you meeting with Gabe Vincent for?’ I was blown away by that.

This meeting took place in the 2023 offseason. Pat Riley flying out to meet Gabe Vincent during his free agency surprised the player himself. But it also shows Riley’s commitment and dedication.
Riley is often regarded as one of the most influential and greatest figures in NBA history. He has had successful stints as a player, head coach, and executive, bringing relevance to the Heat during his tenure as coach and team President.
He is popular for his old-school methods such as his rigorous training methods and even micromanaging his players. He did not shy away from holding his star players accountable and traded Shaquille O’Neal after an altercation.
However, it is still surprising to hear that Riley flew to meet Vincent. Vincent was an undrafted player and signed with the Heat on a two-way contract in 2020. Unfortunately, the two sides were unable to reach a financial agreement, and Vincent signed with the Lakers in 2023.
Gabe Vincent opens up on playing alongside LeBron James
Playing alongside a player like LeBron James is a whole other ball game. Despite his impressive three and a half year spell with the Heat, Gabe Vincent never got going during his time with the Lakers.

Vincent spoke about his experience as James’ teammate and explained what separates him from the rest.
Bron is Bron, but he can be the guy who wants the floor spaced and attack every play; playing with Bron, people talk about it, but he thinks the game so well that when he breaks right, you have to break right even harder. Just get to your spot and be ready for the rock. because it’s probably coming. If that’s the right basketball read, he’s gonna make the right basketball read.

Vincent played for two seasons with the Lakers before getting traded to the Hawks this year. Injuries restricted him to just 11 appearances in his first season with the Lakers, but he went on to make 72 appearances in his second season.
Gabe Vincent on the pressure of playing for the Lakers
It is never easy to play for the purple and gold. The expectations are sky high, and failures are magnified by the fans and the media. Some players thrive under that pressure, while some struggle to play freely.
While Vincent played for two successful franchises, the Heat and the Lakers. He noted that the noise surrounding the Lakers is louder than anywhere else.
The media is a whole different story. here are clips still going around about ‘LeBron said this about you’ and I’m like, that’s not what happened. But you have to talk about LeBron. The man’s great, you can’t talk about hoops and not mention him. People who are fans of the game are heavy into gambling, and everybody has access to their phones. That’s part of it. That Lakers noise is loud, no question about it.

The lights are the brightest in Los Angeles. The club has seen some of the greatest players to ever play the game play for the franchise and win championships. Playing for a club like the Lakers can be very rewarding, but it also comes with its drawbacks.
